# Andrew Veprek **Andrew Veprek** is the Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration. He heads the [[Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration]], which houses the [[Office of Remigration]]. He testified at a [[Senate Foreign Relations Committee]] nominations hearing on September 11, 2025, and has held the post since January 2026. In April 2026 he said the refugee ceiling, then at a historic low of 7,500, might be raised for South Africans, and that talks with countries about taking back their deported nationals were continuing. Newser's and *The Bulwark*'s accounts of the *Washington Post*'s September 2026 investigation name him as the senior State Department official involved in the third-country deportation deals and an ally of [[Stephen Miller]].
