# Andrew Gillum **Andrew Gillum** was the mayor of Tallahassee from 2014 to 2018 and the Democratic nominee for Governor of Florida in 2018, losing to [[Ron DeSantis]]. He is one of only two American candidates known to have publicly withdrawn a concession. He conceded on election night, Tuesday 6 November 2018; by Saturday 10 November the margin — about 0.41% — had triggered a statewide machine recount under Fla. Stat. § 102.141(7), and he withdrew the concession, saying: "I am replacing my words of concession with an uncompromised and unapologetic call that we count every single vote." He conceded again on 17 November after the recount confirmed the result. The withdrawal cost him nothing, because a concession carries no legal weight and the recount had been ordered by operation of law on the margin rather than on anything either candidate said. The other known withdrawal is [[Al Gore]]'s in 2000.
