# Anders Behring Breivik
**Anders Behring Breivik** (b. 1979; legally renamed **Fjotolf Hansen** in 2017) is the Norwegian far-right terrorist who murdered **77 people on July 22, 2011**. Eight died in a car bombing of the Oslo government quarter and 69, most of them teenagers, in a shooting at the Labour Party youth camp on Utøya island. This page covers the man, his ideology, the trial and his afterlife as a far-right reference point. The attack itself is at **[[2011 Norway Attacks]]**.
## The manifesto and its sources
Hours before the attacks he emailed a roughly 1,500-page compendium, **[[2083 A European Declaration of Independence]]**, to about a thousand recipients under the pen name "Andrew Berwick." Much of it is assembled from other writers. The two sources that matter most to this KB are:
- **The counter-jihad blogosphere.** Breivik quoted at length the [[Eurabia]] thesis and the Norwegian blogger "Fjordman," and cited American anti-Islam sites. The pattern of those citations is what forced a reckoning in the counter-jihad movement after the attacks.
- **The American "Cultural Marxism" literature.** Long sections on [[Cultural Marxism]] were lifted from *Political Correctness: A Short History of an Ideology*, published by [[William S. Lind]] and the [[Free Congress Foundation]]. That is a direct line from a Washington movement-conservative think tank to a mass murderer's manifesto, and it is why he appears on the [[Frankfurt School Ecosystem]] and [[Jürgen Habermas]] pages.
To these he added a fantasy "Knights Templar" order, a self-designed uniform and a timeline for European civil war ending in 2083.
## The trial and the sanity question
The trial ran from April to June 2012. The first court-appointed psychiatric team found him psychotic, meaning not criminally responsible. A second team found him sane. Breivik himself insisted he was sane because an insanity verdict would discredit his ideas. On **Aug. 24, 2012**, the Oslo District Court found him **sane and guilty** and sentenced him to **21 years of preventive detention** (*forvaring*), Norway's maximum, which can be extended indefinitely while he is judged dangerous.
## Prison, litigation and parole
- **Conditions suits.** In 2016 a lower court ruled that his isolation violated the European Convention's ban on degrading treatment. Higher courts reversed that, and the European Court of Human Rights declared his application inadmissible. He sued again over isolation in January 2024, and the Oslo District Court rejected the claim on **Feb. 16, 2024**, finding he remained "a threat to society."
- **Parole.** His first bid was denied in 2022. The second was heard in November 2024 and rejected on **Dec. 5, 2024** by the Ringerike, Asker and Bærum district court, which found his rehabilitation "has not yet progressed far enough" to reduce the risk. At the November hearing he called the attacks "necessary." No later parole ruling was found as of September 2026.
He has used every hearing as a platform. At his 2022 hearing he held up white-supremacist signs.
## Afterlife as template
Breivik matters most for what came after him. He wrote the model of the **manifesto-plus-massacre** attack that later far-right shooters copied:
- The [[Christchurch Mosque Shootings]] gunman, [[Brenton Tarrant]], wrote that he took "true inspiration" from Breivik.
- The 2016 Munich shooter struck on the fifth anniversary of Utøya.
- The 2019 Bærum mosque attacker in Norway cited Tarrant, which makes him a second-generation heir to the same model.
His ideas reached them less through the text than through the [[Online Radicalization Pipeline]] and the [[Saint Culture]] that turns killers into icons. It is the lineage that runs from [[The Turner Diaries]] through [[Great Replacement Theory]] and its memes ([[Great Replacement Visual Memes]]).
