# Amy Westervelt
American investigative environmental journalist; founder and host of [[Drilled]], the podcast and reporting outlet that investigates fossil-fuel propaganda and climate accountability. Educated at UC Berkeley; based in Truckee, California.
**Why she matters here.** Westervelt's reporting is the primary sourcing for the vault's [[Corporate Free Speech]] page. Her March 2022 Guardian investigation was the first to publish internal [[Mobil Oil]] documents from the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History showing that [[Herbert Schmertz]] and [[Rawleigh Warner Jr.]] constructed the corporate-free-speech framework in the early 1970s — establishing that the argument oil companies now use as a fraud defense was built by the industry itself, decades before it was needed.
She has written for the Guardian, the Wall Street Journal, NPR, the New York Times and InsideClimate News. Awards include an Edward R. Murrow Award (2017), the Rachel Carson Award (2015), a 2019 Online News Association award for *Drilled*, and a 2021 Peabody nomination.
