# Alice Weidel
Alice Weidel co-leads the [[AfD]] and was its chancellor candidate in 2025. Under her leadership the party has become **the leading party in German national polling**, at 27.8% in the mid-August 2026 average against 21.4% for the governing CDU/CSU.
On **6 September 2026** that lead converted into the party's first landslide: **43.8% in the Saxony-Anhalt state election**, 39 of 83 seats, three short of a majority. See [[2026 Saxony-Anhalt State Election]].
## The Biography Is the Argument
Weidel is a former Goldman Sachs and Allianz analyst with a doctorate in economics on the Chinese pension system, who lived in China for six years and speaks Mandarin. She lives in Switzerland with a Sri Lankan-born partner and their two children.
That biography is deployed constantly by both sides and explains nothing on its own. For supporters it demonstrates that the party is not what its critics say. For critics it demonstrates that the anti-immigration and anti-LGBT politics she leads are a professional choice rather than a conviction. What it does establish is that she is not a street-movement figure: she came from the party's original eurosceptic economist wing and stayed as it moved.
## The Party's Legal Position
The AfD's status in German law is genuinely unsettled, and precision matters here.
The **Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz classified the party as *gesichert rechtsextremistisch*** — confirmed right-wing extremist — on **2 May 2025**. The party sued. On **26 February 2026 the Cologne Administrative Court ruled the BfV may not treat it as a confirmed extremist endeavour while litigation is pending**, returning it to the earlier "suspected case" surveillance regime.
**No ban proceedings have ever been filed** at the Federal Constitutional Court. Cross-party Bundestag motions from late 2024 were debated in January 2025 and never voted on.
So: a party under intelligence surveillance as a suspected extremist organization, whose confirmed-extremist designation a court has suspended, leading the national polls, with no ban application pending.
## The American Connection
Weidel is the clearest single node linking the American and European right, and the connection runs through direct intervention rather than affinity.
- **20 December 2024** — Musk posts "Only the AfD can save Germany" ([[Elon Musk - 2024-12-20 - only the AfD can save Germany]]).
- **28 December 2024** — Musk's *Welt am Sonntag* op-ed defends her: "Does that sound like Hitler to you? Come on!" ([[Elon Musk - the last spark of hope]]).
- **9 January 2025** — [[Elon Musk]] hosts her for a live conversation on X and urges Germans to vote AfD. She claims Hitler was a "communist" and "socialist"; German historians call it false.
- **25 January 2025** — Musk addresses the AfD campaign launch in Halle by video with her on stage: "too much focus on past guilt" ([[Elon Musk - too much focus on past guilt]]).
- **23 February 2025** — the AfD finishes second with 20.8% ([[2025 German Federal Election]]).
- **14 February 2025** — [[JD Vance]] meets her in Munich the same day he delivers a speech attacking European "firewalls." See [[Vance Munich Security Conference Speech]].
- **6 September 2026** — after the Saxony-Anhalt result Musk posts **"Gut gemacht!"** — "Well done!" — in German. An AfD figure replies inviting "strong and constructive cooperation" and saying Germany "would then once again be a place worth investing in." The exchange is the same pattern as January 2025: an American owner of the platform campaigning on it, in the target country's language.
- **May 2025** — [[Marco Rubio]] and Vance publicly attack the German government over the BfV designation.
- **December 2025** — the AfD is re-invited to the [[Munich Security Conference]] after a two-year exclusion.
## Why She Matters Here
Weidel is the test of whether the transatlantic populist right is a real coalition or a set of parallel national movements that resemble one another.
The evidence for a real coalition is on this page: the world's richest man campaigning for her, an American vice-president meeting her on the day he attacked her country's institutions, a secretary of state calling her government a tyranny for designating her party. That is not ideological sympathy expressed at a distance. It is participation.
The counter-evidence is that her party's growth tracks German conditions — migration, energy costs, eastern alienation — more closely than anything American, and would likely have happened without any of it. Both readings are supportable, and the [[German History Hub]] holds them together.
