# Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Democratic representative for the Bronx and Queens since 2019 (b. 1989), who won the seat by defeating the fourth-ranking House Democrat, Joe Crowley, in a 2018 primary while working as a bartender, and who has been — for the whole of her tenure — the figure the right uses to stand for the Democratic Party it wants to run against. She is a democratic socialist by self-description, a co-author of the Green New Deal resolution, the most-followed member of Congress on every platform, and at 36 the person whose next decision the party is waiting on.
## The target
The vault's interest begins with the attention. From her first month she was the subject of a volume of Fox News coverage no freshman had ever received, and the pattern has held: the "Tax the Rich" dress, the Green New Deal "banning cows," the border-facility photographs of 2019, the [[Tom Homan - AOC in trouble now]] threat in 2025 to investigate her over "know your rights" sessions for immigrants — the last a border czar floating prosecution of a member of Congress for explaining the law. The [[Islamophobia]] and [[Nativism]] machinery that operates on [[Ilhan Omar]] operates differently on her: the charge is not that she does not belong but that she is a fraud — the bartender who was really a Boston University graduate, the socialist who wears designer clothes — and the volume tells you the right regards her as the most dangerous communicator the other side has.
## The record and the decision
Legislatively she has moved from outsider to institution — the House Oversight and Financial Services committees, a losing bid for Oversight ranking member in December 2024 that the caucus's seniority system decided, and the 2025 "Fighting Oligarchy" tour with [[Bernie Sanders]] that drew the largest crowds of the year. In August 2026 she said she had "not ruled out" running for president or for [[Chuck Schumer]]'s Senate seat in 2028 — a matchup in which a 2026 poll had her leading the Minority Leader by eighteen points — and at the end of the month reorganized her campaign staff ahead of the decision. The [[2026 Midterms Hub]] has the New York context; whichever race she picks, the right's coverage will have prepared it for a decade.
