# Alcee Hastings
Federal district judge, then long-serving Democratic congressman from Florida. The rare American official who was impeached, convicted, removed — and then elected to the very body that impeached him.
## Why he matters here
Hastings was **impeached by the House and convicted by the Senate in 1989** on bribery and perjury charges (he had been acquitted at criminal trial on the same underlying conduct — a reminder that the impeachment track and the criminal track are separate, with separate standards of proof). He was removed from the bench.
The Senate then **declined to take the separate disqualification vote**, and nothing barred him from seeking office. He was elected to the U.S. House in 1992 and served until his death in 2021. His career is the clearest demonstration that **removal and disqualification are two distinct sanctions** under Art. I, § 3, cl. 7 — the second is optional, requires only a simple majority, and has been imposed just three times.
