# Albert Mohler
Long-serving president (1993–) of [[Southern Baptist Theological Seminary]], one of the largest seminaries in North America, and one of the most influential institutional voices of evangelical-conservative theology in the United States. Mohler is the figure most responsible for completing the **Conservative Resurgence** of the Southern Baptist Convention — the multi-decade insurgency that purged moderate and liberal scholars from SBC seminaries beginning in 1979 and reshaped the convention along inerrantist, complementarian, Reformed-leaning lines. His daily podcast *The Briefing* (2014–) reaches several hundred thousand evangelicals daily with theological commentary on news; his blog and writing operation function as one of the most-read English-language evangelical-establishment opinion outputs.
Mohler's relationship to contemporary Christian Nationalism is **complicated and analytically important**. He has rejected the *label* "Christian Nationalism" in published commentary, pushed back against [[Stephen Wolfe]]'s book in *The Briefing*, and has maintained the longstanding Baptist Two-Kingdoms (Roger Williams) commitment to disestablishment. At the same time, he has supported [[Donald Trump]] (after declining to in 2016, he announced support in 2020 and has continued through 2024), supports much of the [[Project 2025]] policy agenda, and his seminary network has produced many of the figures now operating in CN-coded political and policy roles ([[William Wolfe]], among others, has Southern Seminary connections). The Mohler position is the fulcrum of the *establishment-evangelical-vs-explicit-CN* fight inside the SBC: institutionally he is the most powerful figure resisting the explicit CN turn; politically he has supported the candidate and the policy program that explicit CN delivers.
For the Right Wing KB, Mohler represents the **establishment-evangelical interface** of the [[Christian Nationalism Ecosystem]] — see the Theology Producers and Educational Pipeline layers. He is institutionally indispensable to the SBC seminary system that trains Reformed-CN-adjacent figures, while public-facing he attempts to maintain a doctrinal line against explicit CN labeling. The William Wolfe / Tom Ascol / Founders-Ministries insurgency operates inside the SBC partly *against* the Mohler-aligned establishment, even as it draws on the same Reformed-Calvinist resources Mohler institutionalized.
## Biography
**R. Albert Mohler Jr.** was born **October 19, 1959** in Lakeland, Florida. He received his B.A. from Samford University (Birmingham, Alabama, 1980), M.Div. from [[Southern Baptist Theological Seminary]] (1983), and Ph.D. from SBTS (1989, systematic and historical theology). Before assuming the SBTS presidency, Mohler served as editor of the *Christian Index* (Georgia Baptist newspaper) and as a fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, D.C.
## The SBTS Transformation (1993–)
Mohler became the ninth president of [[Southern Baptist Theological Seminary]] in **1993** at age **33** — the youngest seminary president in SBTS history and a deliberate appointment by the Conservative Resurgence-controlled board of trustees. Over the next decade, Mohler executed a **complete theological transformation** of the seminary: faculty who would not affirm the 1858 Abstract of Principles and the 2000 Baptist Faith & Message's inerrancy and complementarian commitments were systematically replaced. By the early 2000s, SBTS had transitioned from the most theologically moderate of the six SBC seminaries to the most aggressively Reformed-Calvinist.
The transformation was consequential: SBTS under Mohler has trained a generation of Reformed-Calvinist SBC pastors, scholars, and institutional leaders — many of whom now occupy positions across the SBC and the broader evangelical world. Mohler's SBTS is the **principal academic-credentialing factory** of the Reformed SBC.
## Media Operation
Mohler operates one of the most-consumed evangelical-commentary media platforms in the English-speaking world. ***The Briefing*** (launched **2014**) is a daily podcast offering theological analysis of current events — reaching several hundred thousand listeners daily. ***Thinking in Public*** features long-form interviews with authors and intellectuals. His blog at albertmohler.com and his regular column presence across evangelical publications give him substantial opinion-shaping reach.
In **2024**, Mohler became **editor of *World Magazine*** — the conservative-evangelical news and culture publication founded by Marvin Olasky in 1986 — expanding his media footprint further.
## The Trump Reversal
Mohler's **2016-to-2020 reversal** on Trump is one of the most analytically significant public-position shifts among evangelical leaders. In **2016**, Mohler publicly declined to support Trump, expressing serious moral reservations about Trump's character, rhetoric, and fitness for office. By **2020**, Mohler announced his support for Trump — framing it as a binary-choice calculation based on policy issues (abortion, judicial appointments, religious liberty) rather than personal character. He maintained this support through **2024**.
The reversal illustrates the gravitational pull of the SBC's political-constituency base: Mohler's 2016 opposition cost him institutional capital within the convention; his 2020 alignment reflected the political reality of SBC demographics.
## Mohler vs. Russell Moore
The Mohler-Moore relationship is one of the most consequential personal dynamics in contemporary SBC politics. Mohler was [[Russell Moore]]'s doctoral advisor at SBTS and appointed Moore as dean of SBTS's School of Theology (2004–2013). Moore's subsequent ERLC presidency (2013–2021) — during which Moore took strong anti-Trump and pro-immigrant positions — created tension with Mohler, who had shifted to Trump support. Their relationship became publicly strained during the CBN insurgency against Moore's ERLC. Mohler did not publicly defend Moore during the final crisis; Moore's 2021 departure letter implicitly criticized Mohler-aligned institutional failure to resist the convention's rightward political capture.
## Position on Christian Nationalism
Mohler has **rejected the label** "Christian Nationalism" in published commentary — criticizing [[Stephen Wolfe]]'s *[[The Case for Christian Nationalism]]* on *The Briefing* for its "Christian prince" language, its ethnonationalist implications, and its departure from Baptist two-kingdoms tradition. At the same time, Mohler supports much of the policy agenda that explicit CN delivers: abortion restriction, religious-liberty expansion, traditional marriage defense, and resistance to LGBTQ nondiscrimination law.
## The CBN / Founders Dynamic
Mohler's relationship to the [[Conservative Baptist Network]] and [[Founders Ministries]] insurgency is **tactically ambiguous**. He shares the theological commitments (Reformed Calvinism, inerrancy, complementarianism) but resists the explicit CN labeling and the insurgency's most aggressive institutional tactics. The Ascol-Mohler dynamic oscillates between tactical alliance (both oppose the moderate SBC establishment) and rivalry (Ascol's movement operates partly against Mohler's institutional positioning). Mohler's 2021 SBC presidential candidacy — eliminated on the first ballot — demonstrated that the convention's rightward shift had outpaced even Mohler's establishment positioning.
## KB Significance
Mohler is the **establishment-evangelical fulcrum** of the [[Christian Nationalism Ecosystem]]'s SBC dimension. His SBTS has trained many of the figures now operating in CN-coded roles, yet Mohler himself resists the explicit CN label. The tension between his institutional output (Reformed-CN-adjacent seminary graduates) and his public positioning (anti-CN-label, pro-Trump-policy) makes him one of the most analytically complex figures in the contemporary evangelical political landscape.
