# Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani
Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani (1934–2017) was one of the founding pillars of the Islamic Republic and, for nearly four decades, one of its most powerful and pragmatic insiders. A close confidant of [[Ruhollah Khomeini]], he was the consummate establishment operator — wartime power-broker, president, kingmaker, and, in his final years, a quiet patron of reform.
## War and Power
As Speaker of Parliament during the [[Iran-Iraq War]], Rafsanjani was among the most influential figures in the wartime leadership and was instrumental in persuading Khomeini to accept the 1988 ceasefire that ended the conflict. When Khomeini died in 1989, Rafsanjani played the decisive role in elevating [[Ali Khamenei]] to Supreme Leader — a maneuver that shaped the entire subsequent history of the regime and that he may later have regretted as Khamenei accumulated power.
## The Reconstruction Presidency
As president from 1989 to 1997, Rafsanjani led Iran's postwar reconstruction, pursuing pragmatic, technocratic economic liberalization and a partial opening to the West — earning the nickname "the Shark" for his political cunning and "Commander of Construction" for his development agenda. His tenure also coincided with the regime's campaign of assassinating dissidents abroad and the consolidation of clerical-business networks; Rafsanjani himself became one of Iran's wealthiest men, his family's fortune a symbol of the fusion of revolutionary power and private accumulation.
## Late-Career Moderation
In his final decade Rafsanjani drifted into the role of establishment moderate, increasingly at odds with hardliners and with Khamenei himself. He backed [[Mir-Hossein Mousavi]] and sympathized with the [[Iranian Green Movement]] in 2009, was sidelined and at times publicly rebuked, and in 2013 was barred by the Guardian Council from running for president again. He died in 2017.
## Why It Matters
For the vault, Rafsanjani embodies the pragmatic, wealth-accumulating wing of the revolutionary establishment — neither a true reformer nor a hardliner, but the ultimate insider whose maneuvering shaped the post-Khomeini order. His career maps the regime's evolution from revolutionary fervor to entrenched, self-enriching oligarchy, and his late marginalization shows how thoroughly [[Ali Khamenei]] came to dominate even the men who made him.
