# Abigail Spanberger
**Abigail Spanberger** (b. August 7, 1979, Red Bank, N.J.) is the Democratic Governor of Virginia, sworn in **January 17, 2026** as the state's first woman governor after beating Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears **57.6% to 42.2%** on November 4, 2025 — a fifteen-point margin in a state Trump had lost by six the year before, and the anchor of a Democratic sweep of all three statewide offices and the legislature. A former postal inspector (2002–06) and CIA operations officer (2006–14), she represented Virginia's 7th district from 2019 to 2025 after unseating Dave Brat, the Tea Party economist who had beaten Eric Cantor, and built the national-security-Democrat brand — moderate, ex-intelligence, suburban — that her party's swing-district wing has adopted since.
## The first year
Her governorship has been the Democratic model for the Trump midterm: run on affordability, govern to the left of the campaign. Ten executive orders on inauguration day, including the rescission of Glenn Youngkin's immigration-enforcement order; a legislative session that produced an assault-weapons sale ban, a $15 minimum wage by 2028, paid family leave from 2028, a $35 insulin cap, a Right to Contraception Act, re-entry into the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative; vetoes of public-sector collective bargaining and of the first recreational-cannabis retail bill. She gave the Democratic response to the State of the Union on **February 24, 2026**. The one defeat was redistricting: the constitutional amendment she backed to let Virginia redraw its congressional map mid-decade passed narrowly (51.7–48.3) and was struck down by the state Supreme Court — see [[Gerrymandering]] for the mid-decade wars it belonged to.
## Why she matters here
Spanberger is the [[2026 Midterms Hub]]'s leading indicator: the 2025 Virginia result was the first statewide test of the second administration, and its size — driven by a federal workforce the DOGE cuts had hit hardest in Northern Virginia — set the expectations for November 2026. She is also the profile the right finds hardest to run against, which is why the attacks ("deep-state Democrat") reach for her CIA years rather than her record. See [[Donald Trump]] for the referendum framing.
