# Abdul El-Sayed
**Abdul El-Sayed** is a physician, epidemiologist, progressive Democrat, and — as of the August 4, 2026 primary — the **Democratic nominee** for the open Michigan U.S. Senate seat being vacated by the retiring [[Gary Peters]]. He won the primary narrowly over [[Haley Stevens]], 48.6%–47.4% (NBC/Decision Desk HQ projections, Aug 5), and faces Republican [[Mike Rogers (Michigan)]] in the November 3 general — a Toss Up race. He previously served as health director for Wayne County and as executive director of the Detroit Health Department, and was the progressive candidate for Michigan governor in 2018, losing the Democratic primary to Gretchen Whitmer. Endorsed by [[Bernie Sanders]], he occupies the Sanders-aligned, movement-progressive lane of a crowded field.
## 2026 Senate race
See [[MI-Sen-2026]] for full race context. The seat is rated Toss Up and is one of the marquee contests of the cycle.
**PRIMARY WON (Aug 4, 2026)**: defeated [[Haley Stevens]] 48.6%–47.4% (735,625 to 716,222 with ~95% counted); [[Mallory McMorrow]] — who dropped out July 5 but remained on the ballot — took ~4% and endorsed him on election night. A Midwest statewide win for the Sanders/movement-left lane. Pre-primary indicators:
- **Polling**: Tied for the lead in the Emerson/WOOD-TV poll (April 11–13, 2026) at **24%**, level with [[Mallory McMorrow]] (24%), ahead of [[Haley Stevens]] (13%), with 36% undecided. El-Sayed gained **+8 points** versus the January poll — the field's clearest trend-line mover.
- **Coalition**: Leads among under-40 voters **35–18** over McMorrow, echoing the young-voter pattern seen in other 2026 left-populist insurgencies.
- **Fundraising**: ~$2.3M raised, ~$2.5M cash on hand in Q1 2026.
- The only major Democrat in the field with a Gaza-forward foreign-policy framework; the Dearborn / Arab-American vote is both a primary-narrowing and a general-election variable.
General-election opponent: Republican [[Mike Rogers (Michigan)]], the 2024 nominee who came within ~0.34 points of winning.
## Background
Egyptian-American, raised in metro Detroit; trained as a physician and epidemiologist with a doctorate in public health. Built a national profile as a public-health communicator (author and podcaster) and as a 2018 gubernatorial candidate who helped define Michigan's progressive bench.
## Why he matters for the KB
El-Sayed is a test case for whether the Sanders / movement-left lane can win a statewide primary in a swing state in 2026 — and whether a Muslim, Gaza-critical Democrat can hold a general-election coalition. His performance is a leading indicator for the post-2024 direction of the Democratic coalition that the right is actively trying to fracture.
