# Vox (Spain) **Vox** is Spain's radical-right party — founded in December 2013 by defectors from the People's Party (PP), led since 2014 by **Santiago Abascal**, and in the national parliament since its April 2019 breakthrough. It is built on opposition to Catalan separatism, immigration, feminism ("gender ideology"), regional devolution and the 2022 Democratic Memory Law, with a soft-revisionist line on [[Francisco Franco]] and the [[Spanish Civil War]] that has made it the vehicle of Franco nostalgia among young Spanish men. In the European family it sits with [[Viktor Orbán]]'s [[Fidesz]] and [[Marine Le Pen]]'s [[National Rally]] in Patriots for Europe, hosts the Madrid node of the transnational right (the 2020 "Madrid Charter," CPAC Spain), and is a fixture of the [[National Conservatism]] circuit. The vault carries it as the live test of dictator-rehabilitation politics inside an EU democracy — and, since 2025, of how a junior partner sets the terms for a mainstream conservative party. ## The 2025–26 regional cycle Four regional elections in six months turned Vox from a protest vote into the price of governing: | Election | Vox seats | Vote | Result | |---|---|---|---| | Extremadura (December 21, 2025) | 11 (+6) | 16.9% | PP needs Vox | | Aragón (February 8, 2026) | 14 (+7) | 17.9% | PP–Vox coalition | | Castilla y León (March 15, 2026) | 14 (+1) | 18.9% | PP–Vox coalition | | Andalusia (May 17, 2026) | 15 (+1) | 13.8% | PP loses its majority (53 of 109) | In Andalusia, the PP's model region, Juanma Moreno failed investiture on June 30 and July 2, 2026 with only his own 53 votes; the region has been governed in caretaker mode while the PP decides what to give Vox. Vox's stated price everywhere is the same: "priority for Spaniards" over immigrants in housing and social spending — the *prioridad nacional* formula borrowed from the French right. Polling through mid-2026 has put PP plus Vox around 51% against 37% for the left, with Vox drawing both PP voters and first-time voters. ## What it is for, in this vault - **The rehabilitation pattern.** Vox does not defend the dictatorship; it attacks the *memory law* — the 2022 statute that annulled Francoist sentences and banned glorification — as "totalitarian," which lets it recruit nostalgia without owning it. Compare the American right's handling of the [[Confederate Battle Flag]] and [[The Lost Cause]]. - **The coalition mechanics.** The PP's dilemma — govern with Vox and be contaminated, or refuse and hand it the opposition — is the [[Fidesz]] and [[National Rally]] question in a country where the far right was until 2018 the smallest in Western Europe. The regional deals are where the answer is being written. - **The transatlantic link.** Abascal is a CPAC regular and a [[Donald Trump]] ally; [[Spain]]'s Sánchez government was the administration's loudest European critic of the [[Iran War 2026]], and Vox's position on that clash is the party's foreign-policy test. ## See Also - [[Spain]] · [[Pedro Sánchez]] · [[Francisco Franco]] · [[Spanish Civil War]] - [[National Conservatism]] · [[Fidesz]] · [[National Rally]] · [[Viktor Orbán]] · [[Marine Le Pen]] - [[Conservative Political Action Conference]] · [[Great Replacement Theory]] · [[Immigration]]
