# U.S. English
English-only advocacy organization co-founded in 1983 by [[John Tanton]] and former U.S. Senator S.I. Hayakawa. It opposed bilingual education and multilingual government services, campaigning to make English the official language of the United States. U.S. English became the epicenter of the 1988 scandal that first exposed Tanton's racism: when his WITAN memos leaked, group president [[Linda Chavez]] resigned in protest, citing both the memos and revelations that the organization had accepted funding linked to the distributor of the racist novel *[[The Camp of the Saints]]*. An early node in the [[Tanton Network]] distinct from Tanton's later ProEnglish vehicle.
