# Turning Point USA
**Turning Point USA (TPUSA)** is the 501(c)(3) campus organization founded in 2012 by [[Charlie Kirk]] and Bill Montgomery, and the flagship entity of the youth-organizing network mapped at [[Turning Point USA Ecosystem]]. It is the single largest conservative youth organization in the United States, built on campus chapters, a watchlist apparatus aimed at teachers and professors, and an annual conference circuit.

> **This page is the organization** — what TPUSA is, who runs it, what it does, how it is funded, and what it has been criticised for. **[[Turning Point USA Ecosystem]]** is the *network map*: the sibling 501(c)(4), the PACs, the media properties, the donor architecture, and TPUSA's position inside the broader right-wing infrastructure. Entity here; relationships there.
## What it is
A tax-exempt charitable organization, formally nonpartisan, whose stated mission is promoting "free markets, limited government, and fiscal responsibility" among high-school and college students. In practice it operates as the recruitment and radicalization front end of the MAGA coalition — the point of entry through which young Americans move from generalised conservatism into [[Christian Nationalism]], immigration restrictionism, and the donor networks documented across this vault.
The 501(c)(3) structure matters: charitable status bars partisan electioneering, which is why the explicitly political work runs through the separately incorporated Turning Point Action and its affiliated PACs. That separation is a legal architecture, not a difference in purpose — see [[Turning Point USA Ecosystem]] for how the entities interlock.
## Leadership
| Role | Holder | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| CEO and Board Chair | Erika Kirk | Elected September 18, 2025, eight days after her husband's assassination. Still in post as of September 2026 — a May 2026 report that she would step down was denied by Kirk ("First I'm hearing of it") and by spokesman Andrew Kolvet |
| Chief Operating Officer | Tyler Bowyer | Also an RNC national committeeman for Arizona; the operational centre of gravity |
| Founder and CEO, 2012–2025 | [[Charlie Kirk]] | Killed September 10, 2025 — see [[Assassination of Charlie Kirk]] |
| Co-founder | Bill Montgomery | Tea Party-backed businessman, Kirk's early mentor; died 2020 |
Erika Kirk's tenure is the organization's open question. She came to a roughly $85M-a-year operation with no prior political or executive experience, and the succession was decided in barely a week. Coverage through 2026 has been correspondingly divided: profiles crediting her with holding the institution together, against sharp critiques of her leadership and at least one public resignation letter attacking the organization's new direction. The 2026 midterms are the first real test.
## Programs
**Campus and high-school chapters.** The core product, claimed at hundreds of universities plus a high-school arm.
**Professor Watchlist** (est. 2016) — a public database naming college faculty accused of "advancing leftist propaganda in the classroom." **School Board Watchlist** (est. 2021) extends the same model to K-12 board members. Both function as targeting infrastructure: naming an individual, supplying a grievance, and leaving the harassment to the audience. This is the mechanism the vault tracks elsewhere as the state not needing to censor when the institution will do it itself.
**Summits and conferences** — the Young Women's Leadership Summit, the Young Black Leadership Summit, and **AmericaFest** (est. 2021), the December flagship event.
**Media** — *The Charlie Kirk Show* and an expanding slate of cultural counter-programming, including the "All-American Halftime Show" staged opposite Super Bowl LX.
## Money
Revenue grew from roughly $78,000 in 2013 to approximately $85 million in 2024, on a donor base of about 500,000 contributors, with a $64.3M endowment reported for 2024. Roughly $400 million was raised across Kirk's tenure. The named-donor and dark-money architecture — including the [[Uihlein Family Foundation]] and the broader donor-advised-fund routing — is documented at [[Turning Point USA Ecosystem]].
## Controversies
**A documented pattern on race.** The organization has repeatedly parted ways with staff and chapter leaders over racist statements, and has been the subject of sustained reporting from the [[Southern Poverty Law Center]] and Media Matters on the recurrence rather than the isolation of these incidents.
**Watchlist harassment.** Faculty and school-board members named on the watchlists have reported threats and campaigns of abuse.
**Post-assassination fracture.** [[Candace Owens]], TPUSA's former communications director, promoted conspiracy theories about Charlie Kirk's killing, exposing fissures the organization has not closed. AmericaFest 2025 saw [[Steve Bannon]] attack Ben Shapiro from the TPUSA stage over Israel policy and the 2028 succession.
**Government entanglement.** A March 2026 statewide partnership announced by Arkansas Governor [[Sarah Huckabee Sanders]] moved TPUSA from outside pressure group toward formal integration with state government — a shift in kind, not degree.
