# Tipping Point Community **Tipping Point Community** is a Bay Area anti-poverty grantmaker that [[Daniel Lurie]] founded in **2005**, after working at New York's Robin Hood Foundation. It follows the Robin Hood model: the board covers all operating costs, so every donor dollar is passed on as grants, and grantees are held to performance metrics. Lurie ran it for 15 years. **Sam Cobbs** became CEO on **January 6, 2020**, and Lurie moved to board chair. Not to be confused with the concept page [[Tipping Point]]. ## Scale Lurie's Wikipedia biography says the group has **raised** more than $500M. Inside Philanthropy (2024) put total **grants** at about $412M *(single-source)*. The two figures measure different things. Its best-known program is the **Chronic Homelessness Initiative**, launched in 2017. It committed **$100M over five years** with the goal of cutting chronic homelessness in San Francisco in half by 2022. Whether it met that target is not assessed here. Donors include [[Michael Moritz]]'s [[Crankstart Foundation]], the Schwab Foundation and the Wojcicki Foundation. Former 49er Ronnie Lott sits on the board. ## Why it sits in this KB Tipping Point is where Lurie's political career was built. His network of billionaire donors, his credibility on homelessness, and the "nonprofit accountability" theme of his mayoralty all come from here. The overlap is concrete. [[Michael Moritz]]'s Crankstart funds Tipping Point, and Moritz is also the largest donor ($2.59M) to Lurie's 2026 charter-reform committee (see [[San Francisco Charter Reform]]). ## See Also - [[Daniel Lurie]] · [[Crankstart Foundation]] · [[Michael Moritz]]
