# Texas State Board of Education The Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) is an elected fifteen-member body that sets the state's public-school curriculum standards and approves textbooks. Because Texas is the nation's largest textbook buyer, publishers have long tailored national editions to meet Texas requirements, giving a handful of elected board members outsized influence over what students across the country read — the "as Texas goes, so goes the nation" dynamic. The SBOE is the institutional stage for the [[Texas Textbook Wars]], including the 2010 social-studies standards fight in which a conservative bloc, advised by [[David Barton]] of [[WallBuilders]], pushed [[Christian Nationalism]] framing into the curriculum. It is a key node in the [[Religious Right]]'s influence over public education. ## See Also - [[Texas Textbook Wars]] - [[David Barton]] - [[WallBuilders]] - [[Christian Nationalism]] - [[Texas History Hub]]
