# Resolution Trust Corporation
Federal agency created in 1989 to liquidate the assets of failed savings and loan institutions during the [[Savings and Loan Crisis]]. The RTC closed or resolved 747 thrifts holding total assets of $394 billion, making it the largest government liquidation effort in U.S. history at the time. The crisis that necessitated the RTC was a direct consequence of [[Deregulation]] in the early 1980s, and the [[Keating Five Scandal]] exposed how political influence protected the very institutions whose recklessness created the disaster. The RTC was merged into the [[FDIC]] in 1995.
