# RAW
The Research and Analysis Wing is India's foreign intelligence agency, established in 1968 after intelligence failures during the 1962 Sino-Indian War and the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War exposed the need for a dedicated foreign intelligence service separate from the Intelligence Bureau (domestic). RAW is India's equivalent of the [[CIA]] and [[MI6]], responsible for foreign intelligence collection, covert action, and counterproliferation.
RAW's primary operational focus is Pakistan (particularly the [[ISI]] and Pakistan's nuclear program), China (border disputes and strategic competition), and India's neighborhood in South Asia. The agency played a significant role in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, supporting the Mukti Bahini insurgency against Pakistan — one of the most successful covert action campaigns in intelligence history.
India maintains intelligence-sharing relationships with multiple Five Eyes members, Israel, and France, but does not participate in any formal multilateral intelligence alliance — reflecting India's non-aligned foreign policy tradition.
