# Proud Boys
The most politically connected militia group in modern American history. Founded in 2016 by [[Gavin McInnes]] as a "Western chauvinist" men's fraternal drinking club, the Proud Boys evolved into a street-fighting force that provided security for Republican political figures, engaged in organized violence against left-wing protesters, and ultimately spearheaded the breach of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021 — earning seditious conspiracy convictions for its leadership, the most serious domestic terrorism charges in decades.
Then [[Donald Trump]] pardoned all of them.
## Origins and Structure
### Founding
[[Gavin McInnes]] — Vice Media co-founder, Canadian-British provocateur — created the Proud Boys in September 2016 during the Trump campaign as a deliberately edgy fraternal organization. The name came from the song "Proud of Your Boy" from the Disney musical *Aladdin*. McInnes initially framed the group as a "male chauvinist" social club celebrating "Western values" — a tonal register designed to maintain plausible deniability about the group's actual function.
### Initiation Degrees
The Proud Boys use a four-degree initiation system:
- **First degree:** Declare yourself a Proud Boy
- **Second degree:** Get beaten by five members until you can name five breakfast cereals (the "cereal beat-in")
- **Third degree:** Get a Proud Boys tattoo
- **Fourth degree:** Engage in a "major conflict" for the cause (fight a perceived enemy)
The fourth degree — which requires *violence* — makes the Proud Boys structurally different from other fraternal organizations. Violence is not an aberration; it's the highest initiation level.
### Chapter Structure
- Organized in local chapters across the U.S. and internationally (Canada, Australia, UK)
- Chapter presidents report to national leadership
- Estimated 6,000-10,000 members at peak (2020-2021)
- "Ministry of Self-Defense" (MOSD) — the tactical action arm, led by [[Enrique Tarrio]], which planned the January 6 operation
## The Escalation Arc
| Date | Event | Significance |
|------|-------|-------------|
| **Sept 2016** | McInnes founds Proud Boys | Fraternal club framing |
| **2017** | Charlottesville: some Proud Boys attend [[Unite the Right]] | First major extremist convergence |
| **2018** | SPLC designates Proud Boys as a hate group | Official extremist classification |
| **2018** | McInnes formally leaves the group | Attempts to shield organization from his legal liability |
| **Sept 2020** | Trump debate: "Proud Boys, stand back and stand by" | Presidential signal interpreted as endorsement |
| **Dec 2020** | Proud Boys burn BLM banner stolen from Black church in D.C. | Escalation to explicitly racial violence |
| **Jan 6, 2021** | Proud Boys spearhead Capitol breach | Seditious conspiracy |
| **2022-2023** | Trial and conviction of Tarrio + four leaders | 15-22 year sentences |
| **Jan 2025** | Trump pardons all convicted Proud Boys | Signal of impunity |
### "Stand Back and Stand By"
During the September 29, 2020 presidential debate, moderator [[Chris Wallace]] asked Trump to condemn white supremacist groups. Trump responded: "Proud Boys — stand back and stand by." The Proud Boys immediately adopted "stand by" as a slogan, printed it on merchandise, and saw a membership surge. Trump's refusal to condemn — and his use of *military language* ("stand by") — was understood by the Proud Boys as a direct presidential endorsement.
## January 6
The Proud Boys' role on January 6 was not spontaneous — it was planned:
- **Enrique Tarrio** (who was not physically present, having been arrested days earlier for burning a BLM banner) directed operations remotely through encrypted communications
- The **Ministry of Self-Defense** (MOSD) — Tarrio's tactical arm — served as the vanguard force that led the initial breach of Capitol barriers
- Proud Boys members were among the first to enter the Capitol building
- They operated in coordinated formations, communicating via encrypted messaging
- The DOJ proved that Proud Boys leadership planned to use violence to prevent the certification of the election — meeting the legal standard for **seditious conspiracy**
### Convictions and Sentences
| Defendant | Role | Sentence |
|-----------|------|----------|
| **Enrique Tarrio** | National chairman | 22 years (record for Jan 6) |
| **Ethan Nordean** | Chapter president (Seattle) | 18 years |
| **Joe Biggs** | Organizer | 17 years |
| **Zachary Rehl** | Chapter president (Philadelphia) | 15 years |
| **Dominic Pezzola** | Member (broke window with police shield) | 10 years |
All pardoned by Trump in January 2025.
## Political Connections
The Proud Boys' most significant distinction from other extremist groups is their direct connections to mainstream Republican politics:
- **[[Roger Stone]]:** Used Proud Boys and Oath Keepers as personal security; photographed with them the morning of January 6
- **Trump:** "Stand back and stand by" + pardons = two direct presidential signals
- **[[Alex Jones]]:** InfoWars promoted Proud Boys activities and fundraised for related causes
- **State/local GOP:** Proud Boys members have attended Republican events as security, appeared at school board meetings, and run for local office
- **[[Steve Bannon]]:** War Room podcast amplified Proud Boys-adjacent messaging
This political integration is what makes the Proud Boys more dangerous than more extreme but more isolated groups like Atomwaffen. The Proud Boys operate in the space *between* mainstream politics and organized violence — which means they can mobilize people who would never join a white nationalist group but will join a "patriotic" organization endorsed by the president.
## Post-Pardon Status
Trump's pardons devastated the deterrent effect of the January 6 prosecutions:
- Tarrio and other leaders released from federal prison
- Organizational rebuilding underway, though slower than pre-January 6 peak
- Members dispersed into local politics, school board campaigns, and other right-wing organizations
- The pardon established precedent: political violence in service of the president carries no lasting consequences
