# Pioneer Fund
The money behind race science. The Pioneer Fund is a foundation established in 1937 by Wickliffe Draper, a textile magnate and eugenics enthusiast, to fund research into "racial betterment" and "race consciousness." For over eight decades, it has been the primary financial engine behind the pseudo-scientific research on racial differences in intelligence that underpins the entire white nationalist intellectual ecosystem.
## Why It Matters
The Pioneer Fund matters because it is the **funding infrastructure** that made "race realism" possible as an intellectual project. Without Pioneer Fund money, there would be no [[Mankind Quarterly]] journal, no decades of IQ-and-race research, no academic veneer for claims about racial hierarchy. The fund has distributed over $20 million to researchers and organizations promoting the idea that racial differences in intelligence are genetic, heritable, and meaningful — creating a body of pseudo-scholarship that white nationalists cite as "science."
## The Nazi Connection
The Pioneer Fund's origins are inseparable from the eugenics movement and its connections to Nazi Germany. Wickliffe Draper funded the distribution of Nazi propaganda films in the United States before World War II. The fund's first president, Harry Laughlin, was a eugenicist whose model sterilization law was adopted by Nazi Germany as the basis for its own forced sterilization program. Laughlin received an honorary degree from the University of Heidelberg in 1936 for his contributions to "racial hygiene."
These aren't historical curiosities. They establish that the Pioneer Fund was created specifically to advance racial hierarchy as a scientific proposition — and that its founding generation had direct, admiring connections to Nazi racial policy.
## The Research Pipeline
Pioneer Fund has funded a network of researchers who produce the academic literature that "race realism" depends on:
**Arthur Jensen**: The Berkeley psychologist whose 1969 article arguing that racial gaps in IQ scores reflected genetic differences launched decades of controversy. Pioneer Fund was his primary funder.
**J. Philippe Rushton**: A University of Western Ontario psychologist who argued that racial differences in intelligence, brain size, and behavior followed an evolutionary pattern. Rushton became Pioneer Fund president in 2002. His work has been widely rejected by mainstream psychology.
**Richard Lynn**: A British psychologist who compiled IQ data by country and race, arguing for a genetic basis for international differences in intelligence. Lynn co-founded and edited [[Mankind Quarterly]] and has been a Pioneer Fund director.
**[[Charles Murray]] and Richard Herrnstein**: *[[The Bell Curve]]* (1994), which argued that intelligence was heritable and that racial gaps in IQ had policy implications, relied heavily on Pioneer Fund-funded research. Murray has denied direct Pioneer Fund funding, but the book's bibliography is dominated by Pioneer-funded researchers.
## The Tanton Connection
Pioneer Fund has also funded organizations in the [[Tanton Network]], including grants to [[FAIR]] and related immigration restriction groups. John Tanton himself received Pioneer Fund support. This connection links the eugenics-funded race science apparatus directly to the immigration restriction policy infrastructure — the research that claims racial differences in intelligence is connected to the advocacy that claims non-white immigration damages America.
## The Analytical Framework
The Pioneer Fund is the **root node** of the race science infrastructure. It functions as a foundation in the literal sense: the base layer that makes everything above it possible. Without Pioneer Fund money, race-and-IQ research would have had no sustained institutional home, Mankind Quarterly would not have existed, and "race realism" would lack the bibliography it depends on for intellectual legitimacy.
The fund also demonstrates how **dark money enables fringe scholarship**. Mainstream funding sources (NIH, NSF, university grants) would not fund research explicitly designed to prove racial hierarchy. The Pioneer Fund exists precisely to fill this gap — providing money for research that the scientific mainstream has rejected, and thereby creating a parallel literature that white nationalists can cite as evidence.
This is the eugenics-to-race-science-to-white-nationalism pipeline in its purest institutional form: a Nazi-adjacent foundation funds pseudo-scholarly research, which is published in captured journals, cited by identitarian intellectuals, amplified through VDARE and American Renaissance, and eventually appears as "data" in immigration policy debates.
## 2024 Rebrand: Human Diversity Foundation
In October 2024, anti-racist research group Hope Not Hate documented that the Pioneer Fund's operational center of gravity had effectively shifted to the **Human Diversity Foundation**, run by Danish race-science promoter **Emil Kirkegaard**. *Mankind Quarterly* is now published under the HDF imprint. Following the death of Richard Lynn (2023) and amid renewed scrutiny of Lynn's data and citations (June 2024 retraction campaign by a coalition of seven scientists), the same network continues its work under a less radioactive name. The continuity is the point: classical Pioneer Fund infrastructure, less searchable label.
