# People's Party of Canada The **People's Party of Canada** (PPC) is the libertarian-populist party founded by [[Maxime Bernier]] in 2018, after he narrowly lost the [[Conservative Party of Canada]] leadership and broke away to occupy the ground to its right. Its platform combines free-market economics and a hard line on reducing immigration with opposition to supply management, "globalism," and — during the pandemic — COVID-19 mandates, a stance that bound the party tightly to the [[Freedom Convoy]] base. Despite drawing several percent of the national vote at its peak, the PPC has never won a parliamentary seat. Its importance is gravitational: it pressures the mainstream Conservatives from the populist flank, much as harder-right insurgencies discipline establishment parties elsewhere. It marks the rightward boundary of the insurgency arc in the [[Canadian History Hub]]. > [!note] Stub > Phase 1 spine stub.
