# National Alliance (Italy) *Alleanza Nazionale* — the party the [[Italian Social Movement]] turned itself into at the Fiuggi congress, launched as an electoral vehicle on **22 January 1994** and constituted as a party on **27 January 1995**, dissolved into the People of Freedom on **22 March 2009**. > [!warning] Disambiguation > This page is the **Italian** post-fascist party. The vault's page titled `National Alliance` without a qualifier is **William Luther Pierce's American neo-Nazi organization** — a different subject entirely. Link the Italian party by its full disambiguated title, always. ## What Fiuggi Actually Traded The MSI gave up the fascist claim; it received admission to government. Both halves were real, and the transaction closed faster than anyone expected — AN was in [[Silvio Berlusconi]]'s first cabinet in 1994, before the party formally existed, and back in office from 2001 to 2006 with [[Gianfranco Fini]] as deputy prime minister and later foreign minister. Its results held up: **13.5% in 1994, 15.7% in 1996, 12.3% in 2006** — a real party, not a holding company. ## The Price Fini Paid Repudiation in stages, each one costing members. The 1995 *Tesi di Fiuggi* declared antifascism a historic value. In **November 2003**, on a state visit to Israel as deputy prime minister, Fini called fascism **"absolute evil,"** named the 1938 racial laws "infamous," and described the Salò republic as belonging to the most shameful pages of the Italian past. **Alessandra Mussolini — the dictator's granddaughter, an AN parliamentarian — quit the party over it** and founded a splinter. That resignation is the reason Fiuggi is worth studying rather than dismissing as branding. **A repudiation that costs you nothing is a press release; a repudiation that costs you the founder's family is a decision.** It is also the specific step [[Giorgia Meloni]] has not taken, and the cleanest available test to apply to any party claiming to have moved on from its origins. ## The Dissolution and What Survived AN merged with Forza Italia into the People of Freedom in 2009. The merger was Fini's undoing — he broke with Berlusconi in 2010, was expelled, formed Future and Freedom, and was out of parliament by 2013. The former AN cadres regrouped in December 2012 as [[Brothers of Italy]] under [[Giorgia Meloni]] — and kept the flame. **Fini repudiated fascism and lost everything. Meloni kept the symbol and won the country.** The vault should not read that as a moral verdict on either man, but it is a fact about incentives that every party running this playbook can see. ## See Also - [[Gianfranco Fini]] · [[Italian Social Movement]] · [[Brothers of Italy]] · [[Giorgia Meloni]] · [[Silvio Berlusconi]] - [[Giorgio Almirante]] · [[Fascism]] · [[Italian History Hub]]
