# National Alliance
> [!warning] Disambiguation
> This page is **William Luther Pierce's American neo-Nazi organization**. The Italian post-fascist party of the same name is at [[National Alliance (Italy)]] — a different subject. A bare `[[National Alliance]]` always lands here.
The most influential white nationalist organization in the United States from the mid-1970s through the early 2000s, and the publisher of **[[The Turner Diaries]]** — the single most consequential piece of white supremacist literature ever produced, which directly inspired the Oklahoma City bombing (168 killed), The Order's crime spree, and multiple other terrorist attacks. Founded and led by **William Luther Pierce** (1933–2002), a former physics professor and George Lincoln Rockwell acolyte who became the intellectual architect of modern American neo-Nazism.
## William Luther Pierce
Pierce was born in Atlanta, earned a PhD in physics from the University of Colorado, and taught at Oregon State University before abandoning academia for white nationalism. His path through the movement traced a direct line from Rockwell to the modern era:
| Period | Role |
|--------|------|
| **1966** | Joined George Lincoln Rockwell's [[American Nazi Party]] |
| **1966–1970** | Editor of the ANP's *National Socialist World* journal |
| **1970** | Joined the National Youth Alliance (NYA), an offshoot of Youth for Wallace |
| **1974** | Split from NYA; founded the **National Alliance** |
| **1978** | Published *The Turner Diaries* under the pseudonym Andrew Macdonald |
| **1985** | Moved NA headquarters to a compound in Hillsboro, West Virginia |
| **1989** | Published *Hunter* (second novel, depicting a lone-wolf racist assassin) |
| **1990s** | Built NA into the largest neo-Nazi organization in the U.S.; 1,500+ members, 20+ chapters |
| **2002** | Died of kidney failure; NA immediately began to collapse |
## The Turner Diaries (1978)
The Turner Diaries depicts a violent revolution in the United States led by a white supremacist underground called "The Organization," culminating in a race war, the overthrow of the U.S. government, and the global extermination of non-white races. It was serialized in Pierce's *National Vanguard* magazine (1975–1978) and published as a book in 1978.
The novel has sold hundreds of thousands of copies and directly inspired:
| Attack | Connection |
|--------|-----------|
| **The Order (1983–84)** | Robert Jay Mathews named his group after the revolutionary cell in the novel; modeled operations on its blueprint |
| **Oklahoma City bombing (April 19, 1995)** | [[Timothy McVeigh]] had pages of the novel in his car when arrested; the bomb closely matched a truck bomb described in the book |
| **Multiple lone-wolf attacks** | The novel's depiction of "The Day of the Rope" (mass execution of "race traitors") has been invoked by numerous white supremacist attackers |
The Turner Diaries is to white nationalist terrorism what Mao's Little Red Book was to Maoist insurgency — an operational manual disguised as fiction.
## National Alliance Operations
At its peak in the late 1990s, the NA was the largest and best-organized neo-Nazi group in America:
- **Resistance Records:** Pierce acquired the white power music label in 1999, making it a significant revenue stream and recruitment tool. White power music scenes served as entry points for youth radicalization.
- **National Vanguard:** The organization's magazine and later website served as the intellectual platform for NA ideology.
- **Cosmotheist Community Church:** Pierce founded a pseudo-religious organization (Cosmotheism) on [[the West]] Virginia compound to obtain tax-exempt status and provide a spiritual framework for white nationalism.
- **Compound in Hillsboro, WV:** The NA's 346-acre headquarters functioned as a training center, publishing operation, and community hub.
## Collapse After Pierce
Pierce's death in July 2002 triggered an immediate organizational crisis. He had run the NA as an authoritarian personality cult with no succession plan:
- **Erich Gliebe** (successor) alienated members through incompetence and financial mismanagement
- **2005 split:** Kevin Strom and others broke away to form the National Vanguard (separate from the magazine)
- **Membership cratered:** From ~1,500 to fewer than 100 within a few years
- **2014:** Will Williams took control from Gliebe, who was attempting to liquidate NA assets
- **Present:** Technically still exists but with negligible membership and influence
## Legacy
The National Alliance's influence far outlives its organizational existence:
1. **The Turner Diaries remains in circulation** and continues to radicalize new generations — it is still sold online and passed around in WN circles
2. **Pierce's ideological framework** — white revolution through small-cell terrorism, racial apocalypticism, antisemitic conspiracy — is the DNA of Atomwaffen, The Base, and every subsequent accelerationist group
3. **[[The Resistance]] Records model** — using music as a radicalization tool — pioneered a pathway that later migrated to [[YouTube]], [[Telegram]], and TikTok
4. **Personnel pipeline:** NA alumni scattered into dozens of other organizations and online communities after the collapse, seeding the next generation
