# Liberland **Self-proclaimed micro-state** on a 7 km² (2.7 sq mi) parcel of land called Gornja Siga on the west bank of the Danube between Croatia and Serbia. Declared on April 13, 2015 by Czech libertarian politician and activist Vít Jedlička, who proclaimed himself president. Not recognized by any UN member state. Croatia has physically prevented settlement, with Croatian police regularly removing anyone who attempts to occupy the territory. Liberland is the most literal interpretation of exit ideology: if you can't reform existing states, claim unclaimed territory and start one from scratch. The parcel is a product of the Croatian-Serbian border dispute — a strip of land that Serbia does not claim (as accepting it would undermine Serbia's claim to more valuable territory elsewhere) and that Croatia has not formally incorporated. Jedlička declared sovereignty over this terra nullius on the basis that unclaimed land can be legitimately homesteaded. ## Governance Proposal Liberland's proposed governance structure reads like a libertarian wishlist informed by [[Curtis Yarvin]]'s [[Patchwork]] and the broader exit-ideology framework: - **Constitutional republic** with a written constitution emphasizing individual rights and property rights above all - **Voluntary taxation** — no compulsory taxes; government funded by voluntary contributions and land value capture - **Blockchain-based governance** — Liberland has developed a blockchain system (Liberland Blockchain) for governance, identity, land registry, and voting. Citizens use LLM tokens and merit tokens (earned through contribution) for governance participation - **Minimal government** — the government exists primarily to protect property rights and enforce contracts; no welfare state, no redistribution - **Citizenship by application** — would-be citizens apply online; over 700,000 have reportedly applied, though none permanently reside on the territory ## Status As of 2026, Liberland remains a symbolic project rather than a functioning state: - **No permanent residents** on the claimed territory — Croatian police prevent occupation - **Diplomatic non-recognition** — no UN member state has recognized Liberland's sovereignty - **Active online community** — Liberland maintains a government-in-exile structure, issues passports (unrecognized), holds elections, and operates the Liberland Blockchain - **Crypto-libertarian ecosystem** — has become a cause célèbre in the crypto-libertarian community; Jedlička is a regular at Bitcoin and libertarian conferences ## KB Significance Liberland matters as a **limit case** of exit ideology — the point where the logic of sovereign exit encounters the reality of international law. The project demonstrates several structural constraints: 1. **Sovereignty requires recognition.** Declaring sovereignty over unclaimed territory produces a symbolic project, not a functioning state. Without recognition by existing states, Liberland cannot operate customs, maintain borders, enforce laws, or protect residents. Exit from democracy requires either the cooperation of democratic states (as with [[Próspera]]'s ZEDE framework) or the ability to physically defend the territory (which a 7 km² micro-state cannot do). 2. **The blockchain-governance experiment.** Liberland's attempt to build governance infrastructure on blockchain is the most developed example of crypto-governance outside the purely digital domain. Whether it works is irrelevant so long as the territory remains inaccessible — but the governance-design work has influenced the broader charter city and network state movements. 3. **The libertarian-to-NRx pipeline.** Liberland occupies the overlap between mainstream libertarianism and the [[Dark Enlightenment]]. Its governance design is libertarian (voluntary taxation, minimal state, property rights primacy); its implementation strategy is exit-ideology (build a new state rather than reform an existing one). Jedlička himself is a mainstream libertarian, not an NRx figure — but Liberland's framework is structurally compatible with [[Patchwork]]. ## See Also - [[Patchwork]] — The theoretical framework; Liberland as limit case - [[Seasteading Institute]] — Parallel exit attempt (ocean rather than unclaimed land) - [[Próspera]] — More advanced implementation (negotiated sovereignty within a host nation) - [[Pronomos Capital]] — Charter city VC fund - [[The Network State]] — Updated exit-ideology blueprint - [[Dark Enlightenment]] — The broader intellectual movement - [[Balaji Srinivasan]] — Network state theory
