# Legatus
Legatus is an international organization of conservative Catholic CEOs and business owners, founded in 1987 by Tom Monaghan, the founder of Domino's Pizza (the name is Latin for "ambassador"). In [[The Octopus]] frame it is the money-and-business node of the Catholic right -- the donor-class counterpart to [[Opus Dei]]'s network.
## Profile
Monaghan conceived Legatus after a 1987 private Mass with Pope John Paul II; the first chapter met that year in Ann Arbor, Michigan with eleven members. Membership is restricted to Catholics in good standing who lead a business above set revenue and headcount thresholds; the organization has grown to several thousand members across dozens of chapters in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Monaghan also funded Ave Maria University and its law school as part of a broader conservative-Catholic institution-building project.
## Epistemic status
Legatus's founding, membership model, and growth are documented. It illustrates organized conservative-Catholic wealth as an institutional bloc -- the kind of structure the Octopus frame maps -- without, on the evidence, being a covert or conspiratorial body.
