# Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC, Persian *Sepah-e Pasdaran*) is the praetorian military, security, and economic force that stands at the center of gravity of the Islamic Republic. Created to protect the revolution rather than the nation, it has grown over four decades from an ad hoc militia into a parallel state that controls Iran's most advanced weapons, a sprawling business empire, its regional proxy network, and the machinery of domestic repression. To understand who actually rules Iran, you study the IRGC — not the elected president.
## Origins: A Guard for the Revolution, Not the State
The IRGC was established in the spring of 1979, in the chaotic months after the [[Iranian Revolution]], precisely because the new clerical leadership did not trust the regular armed forces it had inherited from [[Mohammad Reza Pahlavi]]. The conventional military (*Artesh*) was a royal institution, potentially loyal to the old order or to a future coup. [[Ruhollah Khomeini]] wanted an armed body whose loyalty ran to the revolution and its ideology — to [[Velayat-e faqih]] and the Supreme Leader personally — rather than to the state or constitution. That founding logic, a guard for the revolution rather than the country, explains nearly everything the organization later became.
## The Iran-Iraq War: Forge and Furnace
If 1979 created the IRGC, the [[Iran-Iraq War]] (1980–1988) made it. The eight-year war against [[Saddam Hussein]] transformed the Guard from a lightly armed militia into a massive parallel army with its own ground, naval, and air branches. It pioneered the human-wave assaults — often spearheaded by teenage [[Basij]] volunteers — that sanctified martyrdom as the regime's central ideological currency. The war forged a generation of commanders, most famously [[Qasem Soleimani]], and bequeathed two enduring lessons: that Iran would always be outgunned in conventional terms, and that survival therefore required asymmetric deterrence — missiles, proxies, and eventually a nuclear hedge.
## The Business Empire
The IRGC's postwar reconstruction role became the seed of an economic empire that now reaches into virtually every sector of the Iranian economy — construction, oil and gas, telecommunications, banking, ports, and smuggling. Its engineering arm, Khatam al-Anbiya, is one of the country's largest contractors, awarded no-bid state megaprojects. Sanctions paradoxically deepened this dominance: as foreign firms withdrew, the Guard's control of black-market and gray-market channels gave it a stranglehold over imports and hard currency. This fusion of guns and money makes the IRGC not just a military but a vested economic interest with every incentive to keep Iran isolated and the conflict economy running — a dynamic the vault tracks as a form of regime [[Kleptocracy]].
## Quds Force and the Axis of Resistance
The Guard's expeditionary arm, the [[Quds Force]], is the instrument through which Iran projects power abroad, building and coordinating the [[Axis of Resistance]] — [[Hezbollah]], Iraqi Shia militias, the [[Houthis]], [[Hamas]], and (until its 2024 collapse) the [[Assad Regime]]. Under [[Qasem Soleimani]] until his 2020 assassination by a US drone strike, the Quds Force turned Iran into the dominant external power across a swath of the Middle East, fighting its wars through partners rather than its own conscripts.
## Domestic Repression
At home, the IRGC and its subordinate volunteer militia, the [[Basij]], are the regime's frontline enforcers against its own population. They crushed the [[Iranian Green Movement]] in 2009 and led the lethal crackdown on the [[Woman Life Freedom]] uprising after the 2022 death of [[Mahsa Amini]] — killing hundreds, blinding protesters, and throttling the internet. The Guard also runs a parallel intelligence service that arrests dissidents, dual nationals, and journalists, frequently independent of the civilian judiciary.
## Why It Matters
For the vault, the IRGC is the clearest institutional answer to the question of how a [[Theocracy]] actually functions in practice: not through the piety of clerics but through the guns and balance sheets of a security-economic complex that answers to [[Ali Khamenei]] alone. It is the organization that makes Iran's elected institutions decorative, that sustains the [[Axis of Resistance]], and that is the principal Iranian actor in the [[Iran War 2026]]. The United States designated it a Foreign Terrorist Organization in 2019 — the first time Washington so labeled part of another government — a measure of how thoroughly the Guard has erased the line between state and militia.
