# Freedom 250
**Freedom 250** (also styled **Freedom 250 LLC**) is the Trump-controlled fundraising and events vehicle for the 250th-anniversary celebration of the Declaration of Independence — the presidentially branded parallel track that grew out of the White House Task Force on Celebrating America's 250th Birthday (Executive Order 14189, January 29, 2025). It is legally and organizationally distinct from the nonpartisan, congressionally chartered [[United States Semiquincentennial Commission]] ("America250"), and its rise is the story of how the visible, money-driving programming of the [[America 250]] celebration was routed around an independent bipartisan body and concentrated under the [[Executive Office of the President Hub]] — a legible instance of the [[Project 2025]]-era pattern.
## Origin: a 2023 campaign promise
Freedom 250's flagship programming was promised three years earlier, by name, in Trump's campaign platform. On **May 31, 2023**, an [[Agenda 47]] announcement promised a "Salute To America 250" task force and "a one-year celebration of 250 years of American independence with Iowa at the center of the action," running "from Memorial Day 2025 to July 4th, 2026." Its centerpiece was a **Great American State Fair**, "a unique one-year exhibition featuring pavilions from all fifty states," which Trump hoped Iowans would host at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. The same announcement promised a Day One executive order to revive the [[National Garden of American Heroes]].
The chain from promise to delivery runs through the White House:
- **May 31, 2023** — the Agenda47 promise: a "Salute to America 250" task force and a year-long Great American State Fair, hoped for in Iowa.
- **January 29, 2025** — Executive Order 14189, "Celebrating America's 250th Birthday," creates the White House Task Force on Celebrating America's 250th Birthday ("Task Force 250") with the President as its chair, and revives the National Garden in Section 3. The order does not name the fair.
- **June 25 – July 10, 2026** — Freedom 250 stages the [[Great American State Fair]] on the National Mall, and a July 4 "Salute to America" with presidential remarks, flyovers and fireworks (WJLA, July 3, 2026).
Both of the 2023 names made it to 2026. What changed was the venue, which moved from Iowa to the Mall; the length, which shrank from a year to about two weeks; and the operator, which became a presidentially controlled LLC instead of the congressional commission. That last change is the subject of the diversion allegation below.
## The diversion allegation (July 2026)
On July 2, 2026, Democrats on the House Committee on Natural Resources released an interim staff report accusing Freedom 250 of misleading donors and starving the congressional commission of funds. The report's central charges:
- **Misdirected donations.** Donors who intended to give to the nonpartisan America250 were allegedly handed routing and account numbers for Freedom 250 instead — conduct the report frames as potential **wire fraud and charitable-solicitation fraud**.
- **Appropriated funds withheld.** Of the roughly $150M Congress allocated for the semiquincentennial, America250 had expected about $100M; the report says White House officials told the commission in November 2025 it would receive only $50M, leaving an alleged ~$100M shortfall.
- **A charity used as cover.** Rather than stand up an obviously political entity, Trump's people lodged Freedom 250 inside the [[National Park Foundation]] — a congressionally chartered public charity — so it could draw on that credibility and donor base while operating outside the transparency and accountability rules Congress wrote for America250.
- **Money to favored contractors.** Redirected funds reportedly flowed to preferred vendors, including the firm that helped organize Trump's January 6, 2021 rally at the Ellipse before attendees stormed the Capitol (see [[January 6 Capitol Attack]]).
Freedom 250 rejected the report, saying no funds were earmarked for one entity over the other and that claims of "diversion" were "baseless."
> [!quote] I'm a lawyer, and I know better than to pronounce that a crime has been committed. But I do know the elements of fraud, and there is evidence of all those elements here.
> — Rep. [[Jared Huffman]] (D-CA), ranking member of the House Committee on Natural Resources, on the July 2, 2026 report.
> [!warning] Sourcing note
> The exact wording of Huffman's "elements of fraud" quote is as rendered in Heather Cox Richardson's letter of July 5, 2026 and contemporaneous reporting on the report's release; the committee's own press statement uses different language (describing Freedom 250 as a "shadow organization" lodged inside the National Park Foundation). Treat the precise phrasing as reported, not as a verified transcript.
## What Freedom 250 actually staged
Freedom 250's marquee output was the [[Great American State Fair]] on the National Mall, organized around a 250-foot triumphal arch (see [[Independence Arch]]), plus a concert series and a UFC match on the White House grounds. The fair opened June 25, 2026 after several musical acts withdrew, saying they had been misled into thinking the bipartisan America250 was behind it; once open it drew sparse crowds amid electrical failures, heat, and a model arch that began falling apart. The adjacent [[Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Renovation]] — the pool turning green with algae — became the celebration's running visual metaphor. The broader D.C. face-lift was financed in part through the [[National Park Service Funds Diversion]].
## Why it's in the KB
Freedom 250 is a compact case study in privatized capture of a public commemoration: a presidentially controlled LLC nested inside a beloved federal charity, drawing donations and appropriated dollars away from a nonpartisan congressional commission and into the orbit of the [[Second Trump Administration]] and its preferred contractors. It ties the [[America 250]] spectacle to the KB's running threads on conflicts of interest, dark money, and the routing of government functions around independent bodies.
