# Defend Europe **Defend Europe** was a 2017 direct-action campaign run by [[Génération Identitaire]] activists, fronted by [[Martin Sellner]], and the highest-profile transnational operation in the history of the European [[Identitarian Movement]]. Its purpose was to dramatize the [[Great Replacement Theory]] by physically interfering with humanitarian rescue of migrants in the Mediterranean — and, above all, to generate footage. ## The C-Star mission The campaign's centerpiece was the **C-Star**, a ship the activists chartered using crowdfunding — roughly £150,000 (about $178,000) raised online, much of it from American and European far-right donors. Their stated aim was to "document and observe" the migrant-rescue NGOs operating off the Libyan coast, accusing them of functioning as a "taxi service" that enabled illegal immigration, and ultimately to obstruct their operations. The group framed the entire effort as a defense of Europe against demographic "replacement." A parallel land operation deployed activists to Alpine passes near the French–Italian border to "block" migrant crossings. ## A comprehensive failure The mission was an operational fiasco that became internationally newsworthy precisely because of how badly it went: The ship was held up in **Egypt** and **Cyprus**. In northern Cyprus the C-Star was detained and crew members were arrested on suspicion of forging documents after **21 Sri Lankans were found onboard** — five of whom subsequently claimed asylum, an embarrassment for an anti-migrant vessel. The crew became entangled in **people-smuggling allegations**. Most memorably, the C-Star suffered a **mechanical breakdown** at sea, and Italian maritime authorities directed a migrant-rescue NGO vessel to render assistance to the stricken anti-migrant ship — the rescuers the campaign had set out to obstruct were dispatched to rescue it. ## Significance Defend Europe's importance is not its (nonexistent) operational impact but what it reveals about the movement's logic. As a **metapolitical spectacle**, it succeeded in its real objective: weeks of international media coverage, a viral fundraising campaign, and a dramatized enactment of the Great Replacement narrative for a global audience. It also demonstrated the model's fragility — the same media exposure that powered the campaign documented its failures and helped trigger the post-2018 deplatforming and the eventual French dissolution of [[Génération Identitaire]]. It cemented [[Martin Sellner]] as the movement's most recognizable international figure. ## See Also - [[Identitarian Movement]] — the parent movement - [[Génération Identitaire]] — the organization that ran the campaign - [[Martin Sellner]] — campaign frontman - [[Great Replacement Theory]] — the narrative the campaign dramatized
