# Corcoran Gallery of Art Washington, D.C. art museum (1869–2014), once the capital's premier private gallery. KB relevance: its June 1989 cancellation of Mapplethorpe's *The Perfect Moment* ([[Corcoran Mapplethorpe Cancellation]]) — the [[NEA Culture Wars]]' defining act of anticipatory obedience, which failed to appease Congress while triggering an art-world revolt that permanently damaged the institution. Financially collapsed in 2014; its collection dispersed to the National Gallery of Art and its school absorbed by George Washington University. ## See Also - [[Corcoran Mapplethorpe Cancellation]]
