# ASIS
The Australian Secret Intelligence Service is Australia's foreign intelligence agency — responsible for human intelligence collection abroad, equivalent to [[MI6]] and the [[CIA]]. ASIS operates alongside the [[ASD]] (signals intelligence) and ASIO (domestic security) in Australia's intelligence architecture.
Established in 1952 and kept officially secret until 1972, ASIS's geographic focus within the [[Five Eyes Alliance]] covers South and East Asia and the Pacific — a region of growing strategic importance as US-China competition intensifies. The agency's operational theater includes Indonesia, the South Pacific island nations, and Southeast Asia, areas where Australian intelligence interests are most distinct from its Five Eyes partners.
