# AIVD
The Algemene Inlichtingen- en Veiligheidsdienst (General Intelligence and Security Service) is the Netherlands' domestic intelligence agency — responsible for counterintelligence, counterterrorism, and national security threats. The AIVD operates alongside the [[MIVD]] (military intelligence) in the Dutch two-agency structure and participates in the [[Nine Eyes]] intelligence-sharing arrangement.
The AIVD gained international recognition in 2017 when Dutch media reported that AIVD hackers had penetrated the network of Cozy Bear (the [[SVR]]'s cyber unit) in 2014 — gaining access to security cameras in the building and watching Russian hackers in real time. This intelligence was shared with the [[NSA]] and [[FBI]] and contributed to the attribution of Russian interference in the 2016 US election. The operation demonstrated that even smaller intelligence services can produce strategic intelligence of first-order importance.
