# Truth Social
The **alt-tech social platform Trump built around himself** after Twitter, Facebook, and [[YouTube]] banned him following January 6, 2021. Operated by [[Trump Media and Technology Group]], publicly traded as `DJT` on Nasdaq, and the primary venue for Trump's first-person communication during his second term.
The platform's significance for the KB is not its consumer market position (small) but its **role as the de-facto presidential bullhorn** — every important Trump utterance from late 2022 onward originates here. When Trump threatens a domestic political opponent, calls for prosecutions, fires officials by post, dictates foreign policy, or — as on April 12, 2026 — posts an AI-generated image of himself as Jesus, the artifact lives on Truth Social. This makes the platform a primary historical document store for the second Trump administration.

## Origin story
The platform was conceived in early 2021 as a vehicle for Trump's return to social media after his post–January 6 deplatforming from Twitter (Jan 8, 2021), Facebook (Jan 7, 2021), [[Instagram]], YouTube, and Snapchat. The reasoning was both political (Trump needed a megaphone) and financial (a Trump-branded social network could be monetized).
The technical foundation is **Mastodon**, the open-source ActivityPub-based platform — a choice that became briefly controversial when Mastodon's developers publicly noted that Truth Social's initial release violated AGPL license terms by not making source code available. TMTG eventually complied. Despite the Mastodon underpinnings, Truth Social does **not** federate with the broader Fediverse; it is a closed instance.
## Launch problems
The February 2022 launch was widely characterized as troubled. Reuters reported that the head of technology and the head of product development resigned within weeks. Most users who attempted to register on launch day were placed on an indefinite waiting list — at one point reportedly 1.5 million long. The Android app didn't ship until October 2022.
Pew Research's late-2022 audit found very low engagement: most users posted little, the network of accounts was sparse compared to peer platforms, and the algorithm's filter heavily favored Trump's own posts.
## SPAC-merger and DJT stock
TMTG went public on March 26, 2024 by merging with Digital World Acquisition Corp. (DWAC), the SPAC that had been raising capital for the merger since 2021. The stock trades as `DJT` and has functioned as a meme-stock and political proxy bet:
- **Trading dynamics:** Volatility tracks Trump political news (debates, indictments, election results) more than platform fundamentals.
- **Insider concerns:** TMTG has consistently lost money. Reporting through 2024–2025 noted ongoing losses, declining ad revenue, and uncertain path to profitability.
- **Trump's stake:** Trump owns a controlling block; the value of his Truth Social shares has at times been the largest line on his public net-worth statement.
## Why it matters for the KB
**1. Primary document store for Trump's second-term rhetoric.** When the president makes a threat, fires an official, declares a policy reversal, names an enemy, or posts an inflammatory image, Truth Social is where it happens first. The [[Mark Kelly]] "punishable by DEATH" post (Nov 20, 2025), the April 12, 2026 AI-Jesus image, the running attacks on judges and prosecutors, the Pope Leo feud — all of it originates here.
**2. A semi-controlled information environment.** Unlike X under Musk (which still has competing content), Truth Social is functionally Trump's own platform. The algorithm and moderation are designed around his posts. This shifts the speech-act dynamics — there is no diverse audience or reply ratio to discipline rhetoric — and helps explain why the most extreme statements escalate here first.
**3. Communication infrastructure as private asset.** Because the platform is a publicly-traded company Trump controls, every share-price-moving Trump post raises questions about market manipulation, FCPA-style boundaries, and the security of the commander-in-chief's communications channel. The platform sits at an unusual intersection of political speech, securities law, and presidential record-keeping (PRA, FRA).
**4. A node in the broader alt-tech ecosystem.** Truth Social slots in alongside [[Gab]], [[Parler]], and [[Rumble]] as the "free-speech" alternative-platform tier — but with a key distinction: Trump's personal participation gives Truth Social a primary-source status the others lack.
