# New York Magazine
Founded in 1968 by Clay Felker and Milton Glaser out of the Sunday supplement of the dying *Herald Tribune*, *New York* invented the city magazine and, with Tom Wolfe, Jimmy Breslin and Gloria Steinem on its early masthead, much of what became the New Journalism. It has been sold three times — to Rupert Murdoch in a hostile 1977 takeover that Felker fought and lost, to Bruce Wasserstein in 2004, and, after Wasserstein's death, to [[Vox Media]] in 2019 — and now a fourth: in **May 2026**, [[James Murdoch]]'s [[Lupa Systems]] agreed to buy the magazine, Vox.com and the Vox podcast network for more than $300 million ([[James Murdoch Lupa NY Mag Vox Acquisition]]). The Murdoch who owned it in 1977 was the father; the one who owns it now is the son who broke with him over [[Fox News]].
## What it is now
A biweekly print magazine and a constellation of digital brands each with its own authority: Intelligencer (politics), Vulture (culture), The Cut (style and gender), The Strategist (commerce), Curbed (real estate), Grub Street (food). The Approval Matrix and the annual "Reasons to Love New York" are its signatures; Intelligencer's reporting on the Trump-era right — Olivia Nuzzi's and Andrew Rice's profiles, the campaign coverage — is why it is tracked here. Its editorial influence is well out of proportion to a circulation in the low hundreds of thousands, because its readers are the people who run the media the rest of the country reads.
## Why it is here
The magazine is the vault's anchor example of a **counter-pole** media property: center-left, general-interest, now owned by capital of a depth usually seen only on the right ([[Lupa Systems]] has the argument). The variable to watch is editorial — whether James Murdoch's ownership pulls the publication or leaves it as the deliberate opposite of the [[Fox Corporation]] / [[News Corporation]] axis his brother controls. The [[Murdoch Family]] page has the dynasty; [[Media Company Timelines Hub]] the industry context.
