# NBC News
The news division of the NBC broadcast network, owned by [[Comcast]] through [[NBCUniversal]]. It is one of the three legacy broadcast news operations, alongside [[ABC News]] and [[CBS News]], and it produces *NBC Nightly News*, *Today*, *Meet the Press* and *Dateline*.
## The split
For three decades NBC News and [[MSNBC]] were run as one newsgathering operation, sharing correspondents, bureaus and a Washington desk. That ended with the [[Versant]] spinoff:
- **October 6, 2025.** MSNBC and CNBC began formally separating from NBC News. MSNBC built its own Washington staff and newsgathering under its president, Rebecca Kutler.
- **November 2025.** MSNBC was renamed **MS NOW**.
- **January 2026.** Versant became a separate public company. It took the cable networks (MS NOW, CNBC, USA, E!, Syfy, Golf) and still leases bureau space at NBC's Washington building. **NBC News stayed with Comcast**, together with the broadcast network, Telemundo, Peacock, Bravo and the studios.
The effect was to separate Comcast's broadcast newsroom from its opinion cable channel, legally and financially. When the White House barred MS NOW's correspondents in September 2026, it was barring a network that now fights on its own balance sheet, not one that shares a parent and a newsroom with NBC ([[White House Press Ban]]).
## Why it matters here
The vault's [[Comcast and NBCUniversal Timeline]] makes one comparative point: across the legacy-media set, **NBC is the one major network whose owner has not realigned toward the administration**. CBS went through the Skydance merger and a $16 million settlement, and ABC paid $15 million to settle Trump's defamation suit. Comcast has made no equivalent move.
The pressure on NBC has run through the regulator instead. [[FCC]] Chairman [[Brendan Carr]] opened an inquiry into Comcast's diversity programs in early 2025 and, in July 2025, a probe of Comcast's dealings with its NBC affiliate stations. Trump has repeatedly said NBC's broadcast licenses should be pulled over its coverage. Carr has argued publicly that a license is "not a property right." The separation from MS NOW can be read partly as a defense: it moves the channel the administration attacks most out of the company that holds FCC broadcast licenses.
Its reporting is also a frequent input to this vault. NBC's campaign-finance dollar figures on the SpaceX PAC, for example, held up line by line against FEC filings in the vault's verification pass, while a human-interest detail in the same story did not.
