# American Spectator ***The American Spectator*** is the conservative monthly that R. Emmett Tyrrell Jr. founded at Indiana University in 1967 as *The Alternative* — the house organ of the young movement right through the 1970s and '80s, Reaganite and irreverent — and that became, in the 1990s, the vehicle for the [[Arkansas Project]]: [[Richard Mellon Scaife]]'s roughly $1.8 million, four-year effort (1993–97) to dig up the Clintons. Circulation rose tenfold to about 300,000 on the strength of it. [[David Brock]]'s "Troopergate" (December 1993), alleging that Arkansas state troopers procured women for Governor Clinton, set the agenda for the decade — Paula Jones read it and sued — and Brock recanted the piece in his 2003 memoir. Ted Olson, later George W. Bush's Solicitor General, sat on the magazine's board while the project ran. ## After the project The project's money became its undoing: an internal fight over auditing the Scaife funds, a federal inquiry into whether project money had reached the Starr investigation's witness David Hale, and the collapse of circulation after 1998 forced the sale to George Gilder, layoffs and a move to Massachusetts. It never recovered its 1990s readership; it went digital-only in 2014 and back to print in 2017, published by the American Spectator Foundation (1969), a nonprofit, with Tyrrell still editor-in-chief and Wladyslaw Pleszczynski editorial director. ## Why it matters here The *Spectator* is where donor-funded opposition research first wore the clothes of journalism at scale — a tax-exempt foundation paying a magazine to run an investigation whose target was chosen by the donor — and the model every subsequent operation, from [[Project Veritas]] to the [[The Gateway Pundit]], inherits. The [[Scaife-Mellon Family]] pages carry the money; the [[Arkansas Project]] page carries the operation; this page carries the lesson that the magazine's own reporters were the first to notice, which is that the money eventually eats the masthead. ## See Also - [[Arkansas Project]] · [[Richard Mellon Scaife]] · [[Scaife-Mellon Family]] · [[Sarah Scaife Foundation]] - [[David Brock]] · [[Kenneth Starr]] · [[Bill Clinton]] · [[Hillary Clinton]] · [[Dark Money]]
