Progressive minor party founded in New York City in **1998** as a successor to the New Party, co-founded by Dan Cantor and Bertha Lewis; Maurice Mitchell is national director. Its core tactic is **fusion voting** — in states that allow it, chiefly New York and Connecticut, the party cross-endorses Democrats on its own ballot line, using the vote totals on that line as leverage to pull Democratic nominees leftward without splitting the vote.
The WFP endorsed [[India Walton]] in her 2021 Buffalo mayoral run and hired her as a senior advisor in January 2022; it endorsed [[Zohran Mamdani]] for New York City mayor in 2025. Its affiliated organizing arm, Working Families Power, was part of the coalition behind the April 2025 [[Hands Off Rallies]].
