# National Popular Vote Interstate Compact
An interstate agreement under which member states pledge to award all their electoral votes to the winner of the **national** popular vote — but only once states totaling 270 electoral votes (a majority) have joined, at which point it would effectively guarantee the presidency to the national popular-vote winner without amending the Constitution. As of the mid-2020s, states and D.C. totaling well over 200 electoral votes had signed on, all of them Democratic-leaning, making it the leading workaround to the [[Electoral College]] short of abolition.
