# SSA
The **Social Security Administration (SSA)** is the independent agency that runs the largest federal program — Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability benefits — sending monthly checks to ~70 million Americans, plus administering Supplemental Security Income.
For the KB, SSA matters because of the gap between the political third-rail status of benefits and the operational reality of **service degradation**: field-office closures, staffing cuts, phone-and-website failures, and [[DOGE]]-driven access to SSA's vast personal-data systems. The fight is less over abolishing Social Security (politically impossible) than over quietly degrading the administration that delivers it.
SSA *certifies* the benefit rolls; the [[Bureau of the Fiscal Service]] at the [[Department of the Treasury]] *disburses* them (see [[How Federal Money Moves]]). Benefits are paid from the program's [[Trust Funds]] under permanent law, outside the annual [[Appropriations Process]].
