The division of the [[Department of Justice]] responsible for counterterrorism, counterintelligence, foreign investment review and the prosecution of national security offences, including unauthorized disclosures of classified information. It was created in 2006 on the recommendation of the commission that reviewed the intelligence failures before the Iraq war, consolidating the Department's intelligence and counterterrorism functions into a single component headed by an Assistant Attorney General.
In the unauthorized-disclosure process it is the body that, together with the agency the information came from, decides whether a referral becomes a criminal investigation at all — and whose lawyers then supervise the FBI agents who conduct it. The Assistant Attorney General for National Security also carries a statutory duty under 50 U.S.C. § 3235 to report to four congressional committees twice a year on every leak referral the Department has received.
The current Assistant Attorney General is [[John Eisenberg]].
