# Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) One of the thirteen principal federal statistical agencies, inside the [[Department of Justice]] under the general authority of the Attorney General, established by 34 U.S.C. § 10132. Produces the National Crime Victimization Survey, the national prisoner and jail statistics series, federal justice transaction statistics, and the periodic Census of Federal Law Enforcement Officers that underlies [[Federal Law Enforcement Agencies Tree]]. Its director is appointed by the President **without** Senate confirmation: Pub. L. 112-166 (10 August 2012) struck "by and with the advice and consent of the Senate" from § 10132(b). The statute still charges the director with responsibility "for the integrity of data and statistics," and attaches no term of office to the post. BJS had no permanent director for roughly three years as of mid-2026. ## See also - [[Federal Statistical System Tree]] · [[Federal Law Enforcement Agencies Tree]] · [[DOJ Component Tree]]
