# US Mayors Hub A **selective** roster of big-city mayors who are national political actors — not a directory of all mayors. Inclusion is by RWKB relevance: mayors who are flashpoints in the federal-versus-city conflicts of the 2025–2026 cycle, or who are themselves national figures. Records live in `/People/` (`type: person`, tag `mayor`). Every mayor listed below has a page. ## Why cities are in the KB The mayor is where national right-wing politics meets local government, and this cycle that contact point is unusually hot: - **Sanctuary cities.** On March 5, 2025 the [[House Oversight Committee]], chaired by [[James Comer]], hauled the mayors of Boston, Chicago, Denver, and New York before a combative "Sanctuary City Mayors" hearing, threatening criminal exposure for non-cooperation with federal immigration enforcement — [[Michelle Wu]], [[Brandon Johnson]], [[Mike Johnston]], and (then-mayor) [[Eric Adams]]. - **Federal force in cities.** In June 2025 [[Donald Trump]] federalized the California [[National Guard]] and deployed Marines to Los Angeles over the objections of Mayor [[Karen Bass]] and the state — the test case for using federal troops in Democratic cities. The parallel fight over D.C. home rule put [[Muriel Bowser]] under direct takeover pressure. - **The new foil.** The 2025 election of democratic socialist [[Zohran Mamdani]] in New York City handed the national right its single most-cited mayoral target, reframing big-city governance as the leading edge of the left. ## High-profile sitting mayors | City | Mayor | Party | Note | |---|---|---|---| | Atlanta | [[Andre Dickens]] | D | Swing-state economic engine; "Cop City" controversy | | Boston | [[Michelle Wu]] | D | Sanctuary-city hearing; re-elected 2025 | | Chicago | [[Brandon Johnson]] | D | Sanctuary-city hearing; migrant-arrival crisis | | Denver | [[Mike Johnston]] | D | Sanctuary-city hearing | | Houston | [[John Whitmire]] | D | Conservative Democrat; largest city in a red state | | Los Angeles | [[Karen Bass]] | D | 2025 wildfires; June 2025 federal troop deployment | | Miami | [[Eileen Higgins]] | D | Flipped a GOP-held city, Dec 2025 | | New York City | [[Zohran Mamdani]] | D | Democratic socialist; national right's top foil | | Philadelphia | [[Cherelle Parker]] | D | First woman mayor of Philadelphia | | Phoenix | [[Kate Gallego]] | D | Sun Belt swing-state metro | | San Antonio | [[Gina Ortiz Jones]] | D | Won 2025 runoff; ex-[[Air Force]] under secretary | | San Francisco | [[Daniel Lurie]] | D | Centrist; unseated London Breed in 2024 | | Washington, D.C. | [[Muriel Bowser]] | D | Home-rule fight with the Trump administration | ## Recently departed / notable former - [[Eric Adams]] — NYC mayor 2022–2025; DOJ corruption case dropped amid quid-pro-quo allegations; left office when Mamdani was inaugurated Jan 1, 2026.
