# Government Publishing Office The **Government Publishing Office (GPO)** is the legislative-branch agency that produces and distributes the official published record of all three branches of the federal government — the **Federal Register**, the **Congressional Record**, the U.S. Code, congressional bills and reports, the federal budget, and Supreme Court opinions, increasingly through the digital **GovInfo** system. Founded in 1861, it is the institutional guarantor that the government's official acts are documented and publicly accessible. For the KB, GPO matters as **infrastructure of the public record** — the apparatus that makes Federal-Register-style transparency of government action possible. Control over, or degradation of, the official record (what is published, how accessibly, how durably) is a quiet but real lever over public accountability, especially as so much of the second-term agenda runs through executive actions, rules, and rescissions that must be published to take effect. This is a stub; expand with the GovInfo system, the public-record-access angle, and any digitization or access controversies. ## See Also - [[Congress]] - [[Legislative Agencies Hub]]
