# Israeli Influence
> [!note] Scope
> This page covers **Israel's influence operations directed at the United States** — lobbying, funding, information operations and elite capture.
> For the country itself see [[Israel]]. For its history see [[Israeli History Hub]].
Israel's influence on American right-wing politics operates through a fundamentally different mechanism than the other foreign-influence entries in this section. The Gulf states (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar) invest sovereign wealth to purchase financial dependencies; Russia runs intelligence operations and covert media funding; China leverages market access. Israel's primary influence channel is **theological** — a dispensationalist Christian movement that treats the modern state of Israel as a prophetic necessity, mobilized through megachurch infrastructure into a political lobby vastly larger than any ethnic or diasporic constituency, and funded by a donor network that has made Israel-aligned policy the single most expensive foreign-policy priority in American campaign finance.
The result is an influence operation that is simultaneously the most powerful and the least legible as "foreign influence" — because its largest constituency (evangelical Christians) does not experience its pro-Israel activism as serving a foreign government but as fulfilling divine prophecy, and its largest donors ([[Sheldon Adelson]], [[Miriam Adelson]]) frame their spending as domestic political participation rather than foreign-interest advocacy.
## The Three Channels
Israel's influence on American politics operates through three structurally distinct channels that reinforce each other:
### Channel 1: The Christian Zionist Theological Pipeline
The largest pro-Israel constituency in the United States is not Jewish — it is evangelical Christian. [[Christian Zionism]], rooted in [[Dispensationalism]] premillennial eschatology, holds that the modern state of Israel is the fulfillment of biblical prophecy and that its preservation and expansion are prerequisites for the Rapture, the Tribulation, and the Second Coming of Christ. This theology — originating with John Nelson Darby in the 1830s, popularized through the Scofield Reference Bible (1909), Hal Lindsey's *The Late, Great Planet Earth* (1970), and [[Tim LaHaye]]'s *Left Behind* series (65M+ copies sold) — has produced a political constituency of tens of millions of American evangelicals for whom unconditional support of Israel is a religious obligation.
The organizational vehicle is **Christians United for Israel (CUFI)**, founded by megachurch pastor John Hagee in 2006. With approximately 10 million members by 2025, CUFI is the largest pro-Israel organization in the United States — vastly outnumbering AIPAC's membership base and operating through a decentralized network of evangelical churches that can mobilize constituent pressure on Congress with speed and scale no secular lobbying organization can match.
The theological pipeline runs through specific government operatives: [[Mike Pompeo]], as Secretary of State under Trump, explicitly linked American foreign policy to providentialist language — suggesting in a March 2019 interview that Trump may have been "raised for such a time as this" to save Israel from Iran. Vice President [[Mike Pence]], a dispensationalist Christian, provided the executive-branch anchor. Hagee's CUFI provided the constituent pressure. The policy outputs — the Jerusalem embassy move (2018), the Iran JCPOA withdrawal (2018), the Abraham Accords (2020) — represent the conversion of theological conviction into American foreign policy through institutional channels.
**Why this is structurally different from other foreign influence:** The evangelical constituency does not need to be paid, cultivated, or recruited. It self-mobilizes through religious conviction. The Israeli government did not create this constituency — [[Christian Zionism]] predates political Zionism by two centuries — but it has learned to work with it as the most reliable political asset in American politics. The influence is real, but it does not operate through the bribery, intelligence, or investment channels that characterize other foreign-influence operations.
### Channel 2: The Donor Network
If the Christian Zionist pipeline provides the mass constituency, the donor network provides the financial infrastructure that makes Israel policy the most expensive foreign-policy priority in American campaign finance.
**[[Sheldon Adelson]]** (1933–2021) was the paradigmatic figure: casino magnate, personal friend of [[Benjamin Netanyahu]], and the largest single donor in Republican politics for the last decade of his life. Adelson spent over **$500 million** in disclosed political contributions, with Israel-aligned policy as his primary condition. He funded the Republican Jewish Coalition, contributed approximately $410 million to Birthright Israel, and exercised direct influence on Trump administration Israel policy. The May 2018 Jerusalem embassy move was widely attributed to Adelson's advocacy; Adelson and his wife Miriam were in the front row at the dedication ceremony.
**[[Miriam Adelson]]**, Sheldon's widow, has become the principal operator of the Adelson political machine — and has **elevated Israel as the singular priority** relative to her husband's broader Republican coalition spending. Israeli-born and holding dual citizenship, Miriam Adelson donated over **$100 million to Trump in the 2024 cycle** (the single largest individual presidential donation in American history) and has contributed **$40 million to Senate and House Leadership Funds** in the 2026 cycle alone. Her spending pattern represents a naturalized American citizen with a primary foreign political identity reshaping US policy through donor infrastructure.
**[[Bill Ackman]]** represents a different donor trajectory: the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack triggered a political realignment in which Israel policy became the bridge from Democratic to MAGA affiliation. Ackman — a hedge fund billionaire whose wife Neri Oxman is an Israeli-American academic — targeted Harvard over its campus antisemitism response, amplified plagiarism allegations against Harvard President Claudine Gay (who resigned January 2024), and by July 2024 had published a manifesto endorsing Trump on grounds that included Israel support, anti-DEI, and opposition to vaccine mandates. His personal wealth approximately doubled on Trump's election. Ackman's trajectory illustrates how Israel policy functions as a **realignment mechanism** — pulling wealthy donors across the partisan divide.
**[[Alan Dershowitz]]** completes the pattern: the Harvard Law professor and self-described "liberal Democrat" who defended Trump's first impeachment and ultimately left the Democratic Party in 2024 after pro-Palestinian protests at the DNC. As Dershowitz himself has framed it, he did not move right — the left moved away from Israel. He advised [[Jared Kushner]] on Middle East peace and presidential pardons. Israel functions as the lens through which the Dershowitz realignment makes sense.
### Channel 3: The Government-to-Private Pipeline
The Israel influence network includes a revolving door between government service on Israel policy and post-government private enrichment:
**[[Jared Kushner]]** is the paradigmatic case. As Trump's senior advisor, Kushner architected the 2020 **Abraham Accords** (Israel-UAE, Israel-Bahrain, Israel-Morocco normalization), managed the [[666 Fifth Avenue]] debt crisis through Gulf-connected financing (requesting and being denied Qatari funds, then escaping the debt through a Qatar-connected Brookfield deal), and shaped US Middle East policy around the Saudi-Israel normalization framework. After leaving government, Kushner founded [[Affinity Partners]] and raised **$2 billion from the Saudi Public Investment Fund** — creating a direct financial pipeline from the Middle East policy he shaped in office to the private fund he managed afterward. Kushner returns in Trump's second term as an informal Middle East envoy with even deeper financial entanglement.
**[[Mike Pompeo]]** moved from CIA Director and Secretary of State — where he was the principal architect of Iran maximum pressure, the JCPOA withdrawal, and the Abraham Accords negotiation framework — to the [[Hudson Institute]] and private-sector positions that leverage his Middle East relationships. His 2019 speech at CUFI cemented the theological-governmental pipeline.
## Project Esther: Israel Advocacy as Domestic Policy
**[[Project Esther]]** — the [[Heritage Foundation]]'s October 2024 blueprint released on the anniversary of the October 7 attack — represents the newest evolution of Israel influence: the conversion of Israel advocacy into domestic policy through the apparatus of antisemitism enforcement.
Drafted by Victoria Coates, Robert Greenway, and Daniel Flesch (a former Israeli diplomat), with co-authorship from Christian Zionist organizations (Luke Moon of the Philos Project, Mario Bramnick of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, the Family Research Council, the [[Faith and Freedom Coalition]], CUFI), Project Esther frames pro-Palestinian campus activism as a "Hamas Support Network" and proposes:
- Visa revocation and deportation of foreign students for pro-Palestine speech
- Federal defunding threats to universities that do not suppress pro-Palestinian organizing
- Forced adoption of the IHRA definition of antisemitism (which classifies certain criticisms of Israel as antisemitic)
- Executive enforcement of Title VI complaints against universities
The structural irony: Project Esther purports to combat antisemitism while including antisemitic imagery (a Soros-controlled pyramid of institutional capture) and was created without consulting mainstream Jewish organizations. It was drafted through the [[Christian Nationalism]] infrastructure — the same movement whose theological framework requires Jewish conversion or destruction at the End Times. The coalition is held together by shared opposition to pro-Palestinian activism, not by shared concern for Jewish welfare.

## The October 7 Realignment
The October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel triggered the most significant Israel-related political realignment since the 1967 Six-Day War. The dynamics documented across the KB include:
**Donor realignment:** [[Bill Ackman]]'s trajectory from Democratic donor to Trump endorser, with Israel policy as the bridge. Ackman's campaign against Harvard, amplified through his massive X platform following (~1.2M followers), demonstrated how Israel policy could function as a gateway to broader MAGA alignment — bundled with anti-DEI, anti-vaccine-mandate, and anti-"woke" positions.
**[[Ben Shapiro]] / [[Candace Owens]] split (March 2024):** [[Ben Shapiro]]'s editorial authority at the [[The Daily Wire]] overrode Candace Owens's on Israel issues, resulting in Owens's departure. The split demonstrated that Israel policy functions as a non-negotiable boundary within right-wing media — one of the few issues on which the MAGA coalition will enforce orthodoxy.
**Campus enforcement:** The campaign against university presidents (Gay at Harvard, Magill at Penn, Kornbluth at MIT) over their October 7 responses created a template for converting Israel advocacy into institutional capture — using antisemitism allegations to remove administrators and reshape university governance.
## What Makes This Different
Israel's influence operation is structurally unique among the foreign-influence entries in this section:
**It is primarily domestic in origin.** The Christian Zionist constituency was not created or funded by Israel; it self-generated through two centuries of theological development. Israel benefits from it but did not build it.
**It operates through democratic channels.** Adelson's donations are disclosed, CUFI's lobbying is legal, and congressional support for Israel reflects genuine constituent preference in evangelical districts. The influence is real, but it is not covert in the way Russian intelligence operations or Saudi sovereign-wealth purchases are.
**It is theologically self-sustaining.** The Christian Zionist constituency does not need to be maintained through financial incentives; it reproduces itself through church infrastructure, seminary education, and scriptural interpretation. This makes it more durable than any investment-based influence operation.
**It creates a legibility problem.** Because the largest pro-Israel constituency is motivated by sincere religious belief rather than foreign payment, the operation resists analysis as "foreign influence" — even though its policy outputs (unconditional military aid, diplomatic cover at the UN, suppression of Palestinian advocacy) serve a foreign government's interests as directly as any Saudi investment or Russian intelligence operation.
The analytical challenge is to hold two propositions simultaneously: that much pro-Israel activism in the United States is domestically motivated and democratically legitimate, *and* that the policy outcomes serve a foreign government's interests with a consistency and scale that, in any other context, would be recognized as a foreign influence operation.
