# SpaceX Q2 2026 Earnings Report
On **August 4, 2026**, fifty-three days after the largest IPO in history, [[SpaceX]] reported its first quarter as a public company. The headline was a blowout: **$7.81B in revenue, up 92% year over year**, roughly $900M past a ~$6.9B consensus. The body of the report was something else — **$18.37B of capital expenditure**, more than six times the prior year and well past the $13.22B analysts expected, of which **$15.83B was AI**, producing a **net loss of $541M**.
This is the first quarter in which the Musk conglomerate had to show its internal accounting to the public. What it showed was a profitable satellite-broadband utility funding a capital program several times its own size.
## The numbers
| Line | Q2 2026 | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Total revenue | $7.81B | +92% YoY; consensus ~$6.9B |
| [[Starlink]] revenue | $4.29B | +66% YoY; ~55% of total |
| Starlink operating margin | 38.6% | vs. 35.9% expected |
| Starlink subscribers | 12.0M | 2x YoY; +1.7M from Q1 |
| Capital expenditure | $18.37B | >6x YoY; consensus $13.22B |
| — of which AI | $15.83B | ~86% of total capex |
| Net result | −$541M | loss narrowed YoY |
Guidance: a **$100B revenue run-rate by December 2026**, and **at least 1,000 next-generation V3 Starlink satellites** launched within a year.
## The call: orbital data centers, 2 GW to 10 GW
The first earnings call turned into a capital-plan announcement. [[Elon Musk]] said SpaceX will begin launching an **orbital AI satellite in 2027** to host data centers in orbit, arguing that solar power and vacuum cooling put the cost structure well below terrestrial competitors. He committed to scaling compute from roughly **2 GW today to as much as 10 GW by the end of 2027** — a draw comparable to New York City in summer — running **exclusively on [[NVIDIA]] hardware**. NVIDIA is separately reported as a partner on AI-equipped orbital compute satellites branded "Starmind," also targeting 2027.
On connectivity, Musk offered the quarter's most-quoted line: *"Even if our monetization per bit dropped by a factor of 10, that would still mean a 10x increase in the revenue of Starlink."*
He also used the call to date the next [[Starship]] flight — Flight 14, late August 2026, attempting the first tower catch of the upper stage.
## Why it matters
**The piggy bank is now audited.** The self-dealing pattern this vault has tracked structurally — [[SpaceX $25B Bond Sale]], the $20B bridge loan, the [[xAI-SpaceX Merger]] — has until now been an inference from private financings. Q2 2026 makes it a reported figure: a 38.6%-margin broadband utility generating $4.29B a quarter, attached to an AI program consuming $15.83B a quarter. "SpaceX's AI ambitions burning through Starlink revenue" became mainstream financial-press framing, not a critic's characterization.
**Capex is now an energy-policy fact.** A commitment to 10 GW of compute by end-2027 is a claim on the American grid, not just on shareholder capital. It belongs in the same argument as [[The Quest for 90 Gigawatts]] — the datacenter power buildout that is reshaping utility regulation, siting fights, and electricity prices in states that had no say in the decision.
**Single-vendor dependency.** An exclusive [[NVIDIA]] commitment at that scale concentrates a strategic chokepoint in one supplier — which is precisely the exposure the [[Tesla-SpaceX Terafab Commitment]], announced two days later, is designed to unwind.
**The market read it both ways.** Shares finished the earnings session higher, then fell roughly 10% the next morning as investors worked through the capex and power math — before the Aug 6 lock-up passed cleanly and the stock rallied ~16% on Aug 7. See [[SPCX First Lock-Up Expiration]].
