# Reichstag Fire Decree
Emergency decree issued by President Hindenburg on February 28, 1933, one day after the Reichstag building was set ablaze, suspending most civil liberties guaranteed by the [[Weimar Republic]] constitution. [[Adolf Hitler]], who had been chancellor for less than a month, used the fire as a pretext to arrest Communist leaders, suppress the press, and establish the legal framework for dictatorship — all accomplished through existing constitutional emergency powers rather than an overt coup. The Reichstag Fire Decree is the paradigmatic example of how democratic institutions can be dismantled from within using emergency powers, a pattern scholars reference when analyzing modern threats to constitutional governance.
