# Killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo
**Lorenzo Salgado Araujo**, 52, was shot in the abdomen and killed by a federal immigration agent in Houston at about 6:50 a.m. on **July 7, 2026** while driving a work crew. He was **not the target** of the operation — agents mistook his white van for another vehicle. The agents were not wearing body cameras. A "crystal-like substance" cited by ICE in the aftermath was later confirmed to be salt, and the U.S. Attorney confirmed on August 13 that testing found no methamphetamine.
An evening protest in Houston on **July 8** grew from several hundred to more than a thousand people. Together with the killing of Joan Sebastian Guerrero in Maine six days later, it triggered the **July 18 "ICE OUT"** national day of action.
On **August 28, 2026**, Harris County District Attorney [[Sean Teare]] announced he would present the case to a grand jury, describing near-total federal non-cooperation with his investigators. The case is one of the clearest live tests of whether a state prosecutor can reach a federal agent — the premise of the [[Fight Against Federal Overreach]] coalition.
