# Hurricane Sandy
**Hurricane Sandy** came ashore near Atlantic City on **October 29, 2012** — eight days before the presidential election — killing more than 100 people in the U.S. and causing roughly **$65 billion** in damage across New Jersey and New York. Sandy's political legacy is twofold: the **Christie–Obama embrace** as the modern marker of what bipartisan disaster response cost a Republican, and the **2013 relief-vote record** that became the standing hypocrisy receipt in every subsequent aid fight.
## The embrace
Gov. [[Chris Christie]] — keynote speaker at the RNC two months earlier — praised [[Barack Obama]]'s storm response as "outstanding" and toured the devastation with him days before the election. The images (memorialized, inaccurately, as "the hug") were treated on the right as a betrayal that aided Obama's re-election, and they shadowed Christie through his 2016 primary run. The lesson absorbed by Republican officeholders was the inverse of the civics-textbook one: visible cooperation with a Democratic president during a disaster is a career liability — a precedent that hangs over every red-state governor's disaster choreography since, and one [[Donald Trump]] (then promoting birtherism, later Christie's patron and nemesis) would invert by making disasters explicitly adversarial.
## The relief vote and the receipts
When the **~$50 billion Sandy supplemental** finally passed in January 2013 — after Speaker Boehner pulled the vote and Rep. Peter King's public revolt — **179 House Republicans and 36 Senate Republicans voted no**, overwhelmingly from Southern and inland states that are themselves chronic disaster-aid recipients. [[Ted Cruz]] and [[John Cornyn]] opposed Sandy aid as pork-laden, then sought rapid federal relief for Texas after Harvey in 2017 — drawing on-the-record accusations of hypocrisy from New York and New Jersey Republicans like Peter King and Frank LoBiondo. The Sandy vote inaugurated the modern pattern in which **disaster aid is a partisan fiscal football when the victims are someone else's constituents** — the through-line to the conditioning fights of [[Hurricane Helene]] and the [[2025 Los Angeles Wildfires]].
