# Great American State Fair
The **Great American State Fair** was the marquee public event of [[Freedom 250]], the Trump-controlled track of the [[America 250]] semiquincentennial: a fair staged on the **National Mall** and organized around a proposed **250-foot triumphal arch** (see [[Independence Arch]]). It became a compact emblem of the celebration's dysfunction.
## The 2023 promise
The fair was a campaign promise before it was a fiasco. Trump's [[Agenda 47]] platform announced it on **May 31, 2023**, alongside a "Salute to America 250" task force: "a unique one-year exhibition featuring pavilions from all fifty states," running from Memorial Day 2025 to July 4, 2026, at the Iowa State Fairgrounds if Iowans agreed to host it. What opened on the National Mall in June 2026 kept the name and the state pavilions. It lost Iowa and most of the year: the fair was scheduled for June 25 to July 10 (WJLA). The chain from the 2023 promise through Executive Order 14189 to [[Freedom 250]] is set out on the Freedom 250 page.
## What happened
The fair opened **June 25, 2026** after several musical acts backed out, saying they had been misled into believing the bipartisan America250 commission ([[United States Semiquincentennial Commission]]) — rather than the presidentially branded Freedom 250 — was behind it. CNN had earlier reported that a number of states declined to participate.
Once open, the fair drew sparse crowds and was plagued by electrical failures, heat, and thin exhibits; a scale model of the proposed arch looked cheap and began coming apart. CNN's Kaitlan Collins reported that aerial images of the near-empty Mall so angered [[Donald Trump]] that White House officials deleted them from official and personal social-media accounts. The adjacent [[Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Renovation]] — the pool turning green with algae and shedding its new coating — ran alongside as the celebration's standing visual metaphor.
## Why it's in the KB
The State Fair is the visible, ground-level failure mode of the [[Freedom 250]] diversion story: a presidentially controlled vehicle that pulled branding and money away from the nonpartisan commission, then could not deliver the spectacle it promised. It anchors the [[America 250]] cluster on the event side.
