# Gaza War (2023–2025)
The Gaza War was the conflict between Israel and [[Hamas]] that began with Hamas's October 7, 2023 surprise attack on Israel — the deadliest day in Israeli history — and escalated into the most destructive military campaign in Gaza's history. In this vault's framework it is the catalytic event of the mid-2020s Middle East: the trigger that activated a regional escalation cycle running through [[Hezbollah]], the [[Houthis]], and ultimately the [[Iran War 2026]], and a powerful realignment force in American politics.
## October 7 and the Israeli Campaign
On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched "Operation Al-Aqsa Flood," a multipronged assault by land, sea, and air that killed roughly 1,200 people in Israel and took some 250 hostages. Israel, under Prime Minister [[Benjamin Netanyahu]], responded with a sustained air and ground campaign aimed at destroying Hamas as a military and governing force. The war systematically eliminated Hamas's senior leadership — including October 7 architect Yahya Sinwar, killed in October 2024 — while inflicting catastrophic civilian casualties and destruction across the Gaza Strip.
## Regional Escalation
The war did not stay contained. Hezbollah opened a northern front from Lebanon, prompting an Israeli invasion; the Houthis in Yemen attacked Red Sea shipping and fired on Israel; and the cascading confrontation with Iran's "Axis of Resistance" proxy network ultimately drew Israel and the United States into direct conflict with Tehran in the [[Iran War 2026]]. The Gaza War is the event the vault treats as setting that entire 2024–2026 escalation in motion.
## The Casualty Toll and Ceasefire
U.S. mediation ran through [[Brett McGurk]], Biden's Middle East coordinator, working with [[Qatar]] and [[Egypt]]. It produced a November 2023 truce that freed 105 hostages in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners. It also produced the January 2025 ceasefire, which McGurk negotiated with Trump's incoming envoy [[Steve Witkoff]] during the transition. That deal took effect January 19, 2025, the day before the inauguration, and collapsed on March 18, 2025, when Israel resumed strikes.
The humanitarian toll was immense. By mid-2026 Gaza's health ministry reported more than 73,000 Palestinians killed and over 173,000 wounded since October 2023. A U.S.-brokered ceasefire took effect in October 2025, ending full-scale operations and securing the return of the remaining hostages, but it remained fragile: nearly 1,000 people were reported killed in Gaza after the ceasefire began, with both sides accusing the other of violations even as both said the agreement still held. Hamas's refusal to disarm and disputes over Israeli withdrawal left the deal's later phases stalled.
## American Politics and Realignment
For the vault, the Gaza War's most important domestic effect is as a realignment mechanism. As documented on the [[Israel]] page, the October 7 attack pulled wealthy donors across the partisan divide and made Israel policy a bridge from Democratic to MAGA affiliation; campus controversies over the war reshaped fights about universities, antisemitism, and DEI. The [[Heritage Foundation]]'s [[Project Esther]], released on the first anniversary of October 7, sought to convert Israel advocacy into domestic antisemitism-enforcement policy. The war also sharpened the right's internal split: [[Christian Zionism]] and pro-Israel hawks on one side, and a smaller "restraint" faction skeptical of further Middle East entanglement on the other — the same fault line that runs through the [[Forever Wars]] debate.
