> [!note] Stub — fill out
On February 3, 2023, a [[Norfolk Southern]] freight train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio; a fire engulfed cars including five tank cars of vinyl chloride (see [[Vinyl Chloride and PVC]]), and responders conducted a controversial "vent and burn" that the NTSB later ruled unnecessary. The disaster cost Norfolk Southern more than $2.2 billion, including a $600M class-action settlement, a $310M federal settlement, and a $22M village settlement, and became a national symbol of rail-safety deregulation. Expand with the NTSB findings, the wheel-bearing cause, the rail-safety legislative fight, and the health-monitoring controversy.
